Default Jump... jump... jump...jump

hello. We just got a dog that is beagle and terrier mixed. At least that is what the owner said. He is a good dog so far. The only problem is that he jumps and jumps. Try to get him to sit is completely out of the question. He has calmed down some since we brought him home Saturday.

However, he jumps to get his front feet on our counter. Which we do not want. How would we correct that?

And our couches. Oh my gosh does he love them. We are always telling him to get off. In to which normally means to get up take his collar and lead him off the couch.

One thing I have noticed is that he does not like to be crabbed at the back of the neck. Like what some trainers say to do. He will usually nip at you. In which we do not try to do. But he is chewing the corner of his bed and that is the only way we can get him off of it.

Any idea you guys my give me would be great.

Krista

This worked for me when teaching my dogs not to jump....

There are a lot of different ways you could go about this, but here is my simple but effective way:

First you must teach your dog what "No" means.

We have taught our dogs what "No" means by putting something on the ground the dog wants and as the dog moves towards the object we put our hand in front of their head and say "No", while pushing them away. If you keep repeating this, the dog will stop going after the object after you say "No".

After your dog learns what "no" means you can use it when they jump up. As soon as the dog jumps, simply push the dog down and say "No".

As far as your dog jumping on the couch simply push them down while saying, "Get Down". The thing about this is, you have to do it EVERY SINGLE time the dog jumps on the couch. Soon your dog will learn he is not able to get on the couch. BUT, the first time you let him jump up you will go back to square one....

thank you.

I never thought of doing the "No" thing. Of putting something he likes then telling him no. I will have to try that. For I have to try something with his jumping. I know right now when he jumps I move foward and tell him down. But then he is right back at jumping.

But I will try your thing.

Thanks,
Krista

Default jumping

I keep a lead on my puppy in the house and watch his every move ... when I see him getting ready to jump I step on the lead. It stops him short.

I love it! ^^^

The #1 thing to remember it to stick to it. If you let him on the couch "sometimes" then he will think that he can be on the couch "ALLtimes." The same goes for jumping.

Good Luck!

Another thing to keep in mind is that every single member of your family has to act the same for the behavior training, and be consistent. If your kids allow dog to hop on and petting and if you do not allow the dog to be hopped on,it is confusing for dogs.
