Timber
It has been 5 weeks since we welcomed Timber into our home. He is doing real well.
He walks properly on the leash now has for a about 3 weeks. The other day was a real treat to me. He saw a cat and kept walking like it didn't exist. So, it shows that patience pays off.
For a siberian husky, he really don't like the outside much. He was an outside dog for 2 1/2 years. now that he is in our home, he goes out to potty and go for his walks and then he is very content laying by my feet and snoozing. I am either giving him what he needs/wants or it is just in his nature. Right now he is snoring by my feet.
He was a sled dog running 10 miles a day. We are walking between 5 to 6 miles a day. I split it up to two sessions. Find that helps him sleep at night and gets the morning started right for me. I am such a morning person and love to take evening walks usually after supper.
Still trying to get him to be a little calmer with other dogs ( he gets excited wants to sniff and play) but he is even doing better with that.
he has found out that the cat (storm) will play with him first thing in the morning. it is so cute as they kiss first and play like two pups and then they kiss and call it a day.
Right now Storm the cat is snuggled up to Gizzy the chihuahua.
sorry for the long post, just wanted to update you all on how Timber is doing. I am getting anxious waiting for all the trails to open up here in Maine. I have a 3 mile one behind me but it is too bad right now to walk.
The other day when I took the dogs for a walk a loose dog charged at gizzy and timber would't walk until he sniffed gizzy to make sure she was ok. no broken skin, but I did get teeth marks on my finger. the 4th and 5th grade girls came out and got the pup. good thing it was a pup as it went for gizzy's throat. I explained to the girls what the pup did and they said they were having problems with him. I asked them how much does he walk and they said he don't. I suggested that they put a leash on him and take him for walks with their parents approval or at least around the field behind their house ( the field is mowed) they said they could do that. A couple days later, the girls said the dog was improving alot and not so hyper.
It amazes me how people can buy dogs for their kids and not teach them anything. It is up to the kids to train and know this stuff. Not to mention I do not know these girls and you would think the father who was out back would of said something about talking to strangers. but he never did. I tried to get his attention and he just turned around and continued to do yard work. Oh well. the girls have some dog knowledge now and hopefully that will help them some.
Have a great doggy day guys/gals

Great work!
It's crazy what you can do with a dog when you are willing to invest just a little bit of your time daily.

yes, patience is the key to life as I tell my children.
I am now working on him waiting. he is very impatient and short attention span, so this morning I took my daughter up to the bus stop with timber ( usually my hubby does this) and got him to wait. He go antsy a little bit and then went back to wait and he did really well. hoping this will help him work on waiting for longer periods of time.
time will tell if this will help. he won't sit on command. that is a tough one, but I figure if he will wait that will be a big improvement. he will stay for about 5 to 6 minutes but waiting he is learning. stay is to keep him from charging out the door and the waiting is for meals which he is getting better at and for crossing roads as well as other dogs passing. he seems to be doing well. just needs more time to get use to it. All these things are new to him.
the reason why I get him to wait before food now is because he was underfed when we got him. and he wouldn't chew his food. now he is eating like a husky should he is chewing his food and put on the vet recommended weight and is waiting for his dish each meal. so small steps. by the end of the summer we will have a new and improved dog.
I am not one to push it in a few weeks like some trainers do. as the saying goes, good things come to those who wait. I fully believe in this.
have a happy doggy day.
