This doesn't sound like hives, nor does it sound like hypothyroidism.

Even without treatment of any kind, hives will resolve on their own in a day or two, unless the dog is still being exposed to the allergen responsible for them. That would result in more hives, not scabbing over or infection.

It sounds more like folliculitis; an infection in the hair follicles, or infected sebaceous cysts.

Red face Hives/bumps skin problems

PUffDaddy,

I read your posting a week or so ago. My Olde English Bulldogge has bumps on her side and back. The two spots I doctored lost hair. As we had been to the vet within the month I though allergic reaction to Frontline or some of her vaccinations. Tried Benydrol too with no success. Ended up taking her back to her Dr. and she has a pretty nasty Staff infection. She's been on her meds for 7 days now and everything is clearing up nicely.

Vet said most likely was NOT something she ate. And we will have to get the staff infection cleared up before working on the allergy that caused it.

Hope you have also been successful in clearing up the out break.

I would be interested in trying the probiotics if they were some what in expensive. The scabs dont seem to be bothering her at all. She doesnt scratch at all really. But her coat is ugly looking. I feel really bad that there is nothing i can do to help. The rest of her looks really good. I just dont know what to do she has had them for months. Now she is getting more. I add some pictures i hope that you can see what i am talking about clearly. She has the scabs along both sides of her back
Hi Puff Daddy
I am new to this forum I just want to say i feel for your pain I have a female pitbull she is 11 months and the past few months we were battling the hives
Ugg I must say very disturbing as they started as one only for a month or so then progressed I took her to the vet put her on a food trial diet one protein and one carb Allery formula by natural balance very good quality grain free LIMITED INGREDIENTS DIET antibiotics and prednisone Prednisone just seemed to mask the symptoms and benadryl didnt work.
Tavist is a real good one as far as antihistamines go especially when combined with DERM CAPS a supplement by DVM its a combo of omega 3 and 6 and after a month or so you will slowly see her coat improve IT TAKES TIME DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED
Also purina makes a good dog probiotic DO NOT GIVE FORM OF YOGURT!!!!
As it may be fine for some dogs if its allergys from food it may be dairy or something
GIVE THE PURINA FORTI FLORA a little powder sachet over the food
Now in the morning during feedings add 1 pump for every 25 lbs of the DERM CAPS and one sachet of Forti Flora
Probiotics not only help with the intestines but stregnthen the immune systems to fight off allergys
I do this for my Sharla and it will eliminate the need for PREDNISONE which works fantastic but may have serious side effects (remember hives may not leave overnight it takes about a month for the derm caps and probiotics to work
Also an essential fatty acid shampoo like HYLITE from the vet
Now important PLASTIC BOWLS SHOULD BE REMOVED NYLABONES ETC>> major cause of allergys maybe the grass maybe bugs flea medication etcc...
I had sharla do a skin scraping to rule out an infection such as Folliculitus
ALSO IMPORTANT KEEP YOUR FLOORS EXTREMLEY CLEAN AS IT CAN BE DUST MITES use lysol and boiling water then just boiling water over your floors DONT BE LAZY If you care for your lil fur baby I am constantly dusting scrubing excetra YOU JUST PROB HAVE A SENSITIVE BABY
You Will go Crazy trying to diagnose
IT COULD BE SEASONAL LIKE PEOPLE It could be IVY OR CERTAIN PLANTS MAYBE GRASS
There is allergy tests to get to the bottom of this blood tests and intradermal now for everything including desensitization shots if needed (YES THEY CAN DESENSITIZE YOUR DOG)it will cost you around 3-400
You should see a dog allergist for this (try to save a bit to do this if all else fails) It will save you in the long run from vet bills and meds that will only mask the symptoms !!!
Call the SPCA FOR LOW COST VETS IF YOU CANT AFFORD they ussually have charities and vets that work basically probono
Sorry to be so long but I want you to have all the info possible for your fur baby (allergys are so frustrating for a pet owner )
I wish you the best email me any time with questions esthercordova@yahoo.com
