Default Question about Bulldogs.

I was speaking to someone in the park today who had a Bulldog. She told me that these dogs have been so genetically manipulated that they cannot mate or give birth naturally. She also said that sometimes, instead of a number of puppies, one large deformed puppy grows in the mother. I think she referred to these unfortunate little things as "seal pups". Apparently, they are not viable and are either born dead or die at birth.

Needless to say, I was horrified. Does anybody know if all of this is true? She also mentioned that Bulldogs are plagued with all kinds of serious genetic problems.

While all breeds have health issues they are prone to, Bulldogs do have more than the average breed.

Reputable breeders will not breed them if they are affected by any of these issues though.

Also, yes, bulldogs require Artificial insemination to be bred, and also require c-sections to whelp.

As far as the seal pups, that is not something I know anything about.

I have had a bulldog in the past, and have never heard of "seal pups" either. I do, however, know that the vast majority of the time they do require AI to breed, and then also a c-section to deliver the puppies.

How sad...Why would human beings screw around with any breed of dog to the extent that it can't behave the way nature intended it to. I don't understand...

Default My mistake.

The pups I was referring to are NOT called seal pups. They're called walrus pups. I found some scant information on the net. Apparently these pups are born huge and suffer from severe water retention. Just thought I'd clear that up!

I've learned something today, I've seen alot of bulldog breeders online and never thought these breed going through this kind of pregnancy and birth issues. Poor dogs.
