Default hicups

Do you do anything for your dog when it has hiccups? I recently noticed that when mia the puppy has hiccups, they feel like they are bursting out of her chest. I figure they have to hurt.
So the other night, I started to rub her head when they started in a circle over and over again not to fast not to slow and not to soft and not to hard (sounds like the 3 bears stories sorry) anyway within two minutes they stopped for the whole night. It was like redirecting her thoughts or something that did it. she has not hiccuped now since last night. and she usually gets them at least twice a day.

I don't think I've ever seen a dog have hiccups! Never would of entered my mind! Wonder why a puppy would get hiccups all the time? Do you have any ideas? Just hoping there isn't a serious reason behind all the hiccups.--and that it isn't a clue to look out for (prevention of something from happening if caught in time) Hope you get where I'm coming from---I guess I am a cautious person by nature! I don't want to worry you or anything but felt I had to mention the possibility. Wonder if I can find something on the web--doesn't even mention hiccups (at least in the index) in my home vet book. Going to go check it out right now--If I find anything, will let you know.

Default Just found this on the web--hiccups

dog hiccups
Any canine owner will probably at some stage have heard dog hiccups. It is quite common, particularly puppies, for dog hiccups to occur, they get them just like people. A spasm in the diaphragm pulls air abruptly into the lungs. The sudden rush of air can move the vocal cords creating the familiar sound. Dog hiccups can come in rapid succession or have long delays in between. They can last for a few minutes or even longer. In general, dog hiccups are minor and usually go away on their own.

The hiccups can be caused by what your dog ate or drank, some minor stomach disorder or stress. If your dog hiccups all day, then it would be wise to contact the local veterinarian. Dog hiccups can be exhausting for the animal and, in rare cases, could be a symptom of a more serious disorder. It has been suggested that hiccups in dogs - and humans for that matter - represent a primitive reflex similar to that of the opening and closing of gills in some lower vertebrate animals

A member of another forum wrote this:
Pooka is not a puppy anymore but he still gets the hiccups occasionally. When he does, I rub his tummy. I entend my hand horizontally over his tummy and, using a good amount of pressure, I rub my hand over the length of his tummy and they usually go away within a minute or two!

ya i have rubbed the tummy too, howeve,r we were already in our sleeping positions,me in my little corner along the edge, while she is sprawled straight up and down the length of me and then spaz the other pit sprawled straight up and down the length of her and a cat in each corner on the top. its like sleeping with 3 adults in a double bed and they sleep under the covers too with there heads pocking out. so i couldnt quite reach her tummy without unsettling the whole bedroom ritual of everyone getting into their place for the night. I called a vet and they said to bring her right in. So i did on a Sunday they made it sound like it could be serious. When i got there the vet laughed and said there was no problem with her, that sometimes the techs make it sound that way as they cant say one way or another if there is something wrong. But of course that didnt stop them from charging me 85.00 for absolutely nothing.

Dog hiccups are like human hiccups. It's normal don't worry. Maybe he just needs water
