Dog Waste and Me
Hi there!
I have a 6 year old Golden Retriever whom I can't stand picking up waste for anymore whilst we're out walking...
Does anybody on this forum have any ideas, techniques or product suggestions that allowing me to avoid this gruesome task every day?
Cheers,
J

I don't know that there is a way to get out of it that is 100% effective. It is part of the responsibility of having a dog to pick up the waste. Personally, it makes me furious when people don't pick up after their dogs! I did see something at the pet food store that might make the task a little less unpleasant. It's a scoop sort of thing with a long handle. The idea is that you scoop up the poop and deposit it in the nearest trash container. The thing is, it would still have to be washed but, if you live in a house you could hose off the "business end". I never looked too closely at it because it seemed like a waste of money to me.
I buy biodegradable vanilla scented poop bags from my local dollar store. They look like little green garbage bags with handles that you can tie up. Once you pick up the poop, you can no longer see or smell it. I know a lot of people use clear plastic bags...Not for me. Once I've picked it up, I no longer want to look at it or smell it so these work really well for me. Those are the only two options I can think of.

Try walking your dog around the yard for a little while before you take him/her on its walk, that way he/she will do his/her business in the privacy of its own yard, he/she can then enjoy his/her walk without walking like he/she has a stick up its butt and you dont have to worry about carrying poopy bags back home. i would still carry one just in case though.

However, unless you're willing to live with a yard knee deep in crap, it still has to be picked up and disposed of.

I just consider myself extremely lucky to have a dog in the first place and so picking up the poop is no problem to me. :???:

What is wrong with picking up the waste? If you don't like it, don't have a dog?

I have to agree with you there! Picking up after my girls is a minuscule price to pay for all the joy they bring me!

well of course, but that wasnt what she was asking- she had mentioned she did not like doing it out on her walks, unless the 3 dots mean or any other time.

You're right. However, I just don't see what the difference is between picking up poop in your own yard or in someone else's. It doesn't smell any better...

Oh I agree with you- but maybe some people are more self conscious than others and it bothers them to be seen carrying around a bag of poop or someone sees them bend over to pick it up knowing full well they will be carrying it with them the entire walk.

I actually laughed out loud at this.
I still don't see the big deal. Nappy bag over your hand, pick up the poop, pull the nappy bag down, tie it up, throw it in the nearest disposal or if you are going back past where you picked it up, hang it on a close by tree and pick it up on the way back if you don't want to carry it around. We are lucky enough to be able to own a few local fields so we hook poop bags on posts or trees, we'd look pretty stupid carrying around 20+ poop bags for a few miles lmao. I don't have any problems though, if you feed a good quality diet it shouldn't be to difficult or smell too bad to pick it up.

I agree 100%
However, if you happen to live in a big city and someone sees you hanging a bag of dog crap on a tree and walking away, chances are that someone will be "outraged" enough to call either the police or animal control on you. This is not a "good thing a la Martha Stewart."
The way I see it, it is part and parcel of the responsibility you accept when you take a dog into your life. Granted, it is not one of the more pleasant aspects of sharing your life with dogs but, is it really worse than changing diapers? Crap is crap...

We built a poop box for our dogs. and we make sure they go before they walk them. We staked 4x4's to the ground in a large square, dropped black plastic in the bottom, filled it with sand and that's where the dogs go. We clean it out once a week. Pitchfork is all you need.

Ehh I thought it would be common sense not to do it in the city/parks, I meant in walking fields and abandoned bridle ways.

Hi guys,
I'm not here to spam or hijack a thread - but picked up your conversation and hope I can add a bit of value with an on-topic comment.
We have spoken to hundreds of dog owners in the development of our new poop scoop. Our experience is that some dog lovers really hate picking up and some don't mind it. (Some dog owners over here in the UK actually said they were appreciative of a bit of warmth in their pockets on cold winter's walks!!)
We're launching the world's first one-push poop scoop in October (In the UK, but shipping to the US too) with retail agreements - we hope - to follow next year.
It's called Poopsta and it picks, packs, contains and carries. You can even use it to pick up without bending, has multi-poop capacity and it has an easy-clip shoulder strap.
There's a few links for a sneak preview that might be of interest here:

Follow us on Twitter
(bit ropey - needs updating - but you get the idea)
Fingers crossed Poopsta will bring a little style and fun to a surprisingly emotive subject!
Regards to all at I Love Dogs from Poopsta.
Richard
PS Please let us know what you think of the Poopsta. Feedback is crucial. Everyone we have shown it to so far has been amazed. Hope you like what you see.

Unfortunately, neither Lara or her big sister Bailey take much interest in poop once they have presented me with "the goods." However, those with the somewhat dubious honour of picking up and disposing of said poop may consider your device a Godsend.

to me if you have to bend over that far you might as well just use the bag and pick it up the bag would be lighter to carry.

Whilst I still hate picking up poop, I managed to find a product that's really helped. It's called a 'Dicky Bag' and it's a bag where you can store poops, extra bags and it's scented. It also has an attachment so I affix it to the leach and I don't need to carry it.
Dicky Bag - the Ultimate Dog Poop Bags
I still do have to pick up the poops with my hands which isn't so great, but at least the bags are designed for the job and don't have holes in them like the supermarket ones!
