How do you get a dog to bark?
I have tried treats, and toys, and asking if they want to go out, go for a walk, and go for a ride in the car. They get excited and run around in circles and roll around on the floor and in my lap, but I cannot get either dog to bark. Any of you have any ideas? What makes your dog bark? Let me hear what you have to say in case there is something I haven't tried.

Lol, A little off the wall--but try howling like a wolf at them! A long deep howl. Lol, Why do you want them to bark!!! I wish mine wouldn't most of the time!

I want them to bark so they can tell me when they have to go out. The bell on the door didn't work. They think I am retarded for doing it. All it does is let them know when someone comes in the house. And I did bark at them, too. I'll try howling after the baby wakes up.

Neither of my girls seems to have any trouble exercising their vocal chords. It's the "cease and desist" part that they have trouble with. There are more than a few dog parents who would feel blessed to have dogs that don't bark their fool heads off!

I think you should just count your blessings! I've had barkers (pomeranians) who I thought would drive me mad. Once they start barking, they don't want to stop! My dog does not bark. I've heard him bark maybe 10 or 15 times since I brought him home in December. The only time he barks is if he is playing and gets wild and wound up, then he barks once and is ashamed of himself. Its actually really cute. I tried to train him to bark and I couldn't. I am a good trainer too. Some dogs are just not barkers. You've got big guys too, so maybe its a good thing. Since Luca doesn't bark, I have to pay close attention to his facial expressions to know if he has to go out. He gets this frantic look on his face when he has to go and I ask him if he needs to go and then he starts dancing.

I ask mine if they want to go out, and if they have to go, they get so excited they almost knock me over. I like the big deep bark better than the short high pitched yappy barks. I remember when I moved into my very first appartment. I got a chihuahua. People warned me about what a yappy dog they can be. When he was 4 months old, he saw his reflection in a mirror and barked for the first time. It was also the only time he ever barked. He scared himself so bad he never barked again. He ran peeing all the way to his cat carrier. (he was so little I used a cat carrier for a crate)

Lol... I also find this funny because there are a lot of people who are looking for ways on how to shut or stop their dogs from barking and you want to make them bark... anyway...
I dont know if this will work... but howling (like what someone already suggested) works for my dogs...

Lol! That is funny!! I haven't done it to my 2 boys for a long time, Lol, Don't want the neighbors to hear me! And I think you will get some kind of reaction from any dog when you do this---primal thing I guess.
Mine would start howling as soon as I did it. I know it really gets their attention! Oh well, at least you got a good laugh out of it all, ha, ha!:-D:mrgreen:

I can just imagine! I can teach you how to get your canine kids to bark on command but, I don't think that will help your "bathroom situation."

lol, it is a blessing, you know.
My husky doesn't make any noise (weird, i know), until my northern inuit pup starts yapping her head off. Then Ami starts a slow, pitiful, low moan. She does not care for Lupa's loud mouth, lol.

I've been trying for a long time now, to get my dogs to bark. Of course I'm down to only one dog at the moment.
I did way too good of a job teaching my dogs not to bark and then I guess they thought I meant never to bark, at least when they are in the house. Out side they bark at things, that walk past my back fence, in the creek bed. Now that Lena is the only dog, she doesn't even do that any more. In her old age and with out her life long doggy pal, she has become a real velcro dog and hardly even wants to go out side unless we go together.
I would love it if I could get Lena to bark just to tell me when somebody is at the door, because I don't have a doorbell and if I am in the bedroom, I don't hear people knocking.
I've tried barking and howling and all kinds of other noises and I'm sure my neighbors think I'm crazy. Nothing works. Lunareclipse, if you ever figure out the trick for your dogs, I'd like to know, maybe it will work for me too.
When I get another young dog, I'm going to have to figure out how to teach the dog to not stop barking totally.

Some dogs are really quiet. I think you should ask a dog trainer about that. They can make dogs bark easily

barking!
i wish i could get my 2 to stop barking lol. my puppy likes to run after me when im in my garden and will not stop barking at me until i turn on the sprinklers in the garden (another way i keep him out of the garden, he's been trampling my tomatoes and cucumbers) my rylie barks if someone knocks on the door or if someone is around the fence.
but my bf's sister trained her 2 rotties by getting them really excited until they barked and then used a clicker and a treat. it took her a few weeks but now they will bark on comand and when they need to go potty

This title sure caught my eye because my Lily (a beagle corgi mix) is the quietest dog I have ever had. The two breeds that she is makes even more funny LOL! I have had other beagles and beagle mixes and they sure had no problems barking LOL! She did not bark until we had her about 5 days. She was adopted at the age of 2. The only time, and my mean ONLY time she will bark is when she sees a cat which is really not that often, and even then she dont bark that much.
What she will do is run around the yard about three or 4 times in a row real fast getting the neighbors dogs all worked up and barking, then she sits back very quietly and takes it all in ! The neighbors will come out and tell their dogs to be quiet. She is a little stinker.
Glad to read I dont have the only non-barking dog LOL!
