Jasmine
Jasmine,
I found the courage to call back Pegasus Laboratories yesterday. The memories of your last 57 days with us came flooding back. The grief we have been suffering since 09-04-09 manifested itself once more for I had to speak your name out loud once again. The guilt I carry for giving you this medicine runs deep.
I knew what they would say," ProIn did not contribute to her death. There is no documented research that indicates ProIn neither does any harm nor kills.... It only stays in the system for 4 hours... We are pet lovers.......We can hear how much you cared for Jasmine.... (I firmly believe all this was a script she was reading). We treat all information from pet owners seriously....You sent no medical records for Jasmine when you changed Doctors. What did he say about ProIn? (Nothing, he was not going to discredit a fellow Doctor but he did bring out his Plum reference book and showed me where she should never have been given Diatro {Lomotil} for diarrhea). He did his very best to make her last days comfortable. Took her off all the meds, gave her pepto bismol to stop her diarrhea. And then I told her, we're not here to discuss the 'other vet'.
This scripted phone conversation went on for about 15 more minutes and then I was asked if I had anything further to say. Yes, as the manufacturer of this drug, you must make Vets better informed of adverse reactions to ProIn. Help make it mandatory that Vets tell us about adverse reactions. Allow us the right to make informed decisions about our pets health care.
We hear your voice...We hear Jasmine's voice...You sent your information to the Board of Directors and I have passed it along to them....
I never expected them to say "Yes we agree. We killed her." I did expect, 'We'll research this drug further..."
She sounded like I was the only person who ever complained to them about this drug? Was she telling me that no one else had ever told them that ProIn kills? Has no one else had the courage to do this?
As I have quoted from the FDA website in all my recent posts: “If you do not file a complaint with the FDA...you're giving the manufacturer ammunition to use against you. They can claim there are so few cases of adverse reactions... nothing needs to be done. When you don't file, you stack the statistics in the manufacturers favor. Don't depend on your vet's office."
It’s never too late to do this. I really have never been the type of individual who complains but this drug, ProIn, helped kill my beloved Jasmine. I will not rest.

Sweetie:
I know you are grieving terribly for the loss of your little angel. However, please understand that you have nothing to feel guilty about. You acted on the advice of your veterinarian. You are supposed to be able to trust your veterinarian not to give your fur baby a dangerous drug.
The guilt here belongs to the vet who must receive reports of adverse reactions to drugs and still prescribed ProIn for your Jasmine. This was one million % NOT your fault!!!

Thanks, Lara's Mom,
Yes, the vet should feel terribly guilty, but I doubt it. When I first approached her after 5 doses in Jasmine's system, her remark to me was that she knew of no adverse side affects and had no knowledge of it harming any dog. So therefore, I have concluded that Vets are not giving any training in this area whatsoever or that they just don't care. This is why I've taken my campaign one step further by contacting the DVM Board here in GA.
A governing body, other than the good folks on dog forums, need to know this about any drug.

You know--I had to take my Max to the vet's to have his toenails clipped yesterday (very black nails--can't see the 'quick' at all). While I was sitting in the exam room waiting--I spied a pamphlet (for the taking) titled: Do You Notice His Painful Arthritis ? and below at bottom I see the word Rimadyl so I put it in my purse for later reading--curious to know what this company had to say about side effects--what to do --to notify, etc. Well, there were a lot of 'big worded' paragraphs promoting the da** drug and at the end of the promotion--One paragraph on Safety Information which gave side effects and to contact your vet if serious side effects. BUT what really gets me is that there was no mention of the fact that the vet should do any blood work to check on the liver or kidney functions or to rule out any other (and there are some mentioned in very fine print in the description of this drug--you have to have a magnifying glass to read it-let alone even find it!)--any other diseases or complications the individual dog may have before prescribing this drug at all! There is such a big gap in communications between drug company, vet, and the pet owner--This needs to be rectified. BUT it sounds to me like mainly the vet is at fault for not checking it out whether the dog should be given the da** drug in the 1st place!! And I do not take the blame off of the drug company either--Most of these bad drugs should not even be on the market at all! Got to make their money off of the crap one way or another--If not safe for humans--How can it be safe for animals!!??--Nothing but GREED!!! and to he** with the poor dog! Time to stop--I'm going to get carried away again!

Yes corky/max,
The initial fault lies with the drug Company for they do a very poor job of educating the Veterinary community, the public, as to side effects/adverse reactions to drugs and then when confronted, the Vet denies any knowledge of this information-so who ultimately is respondsible to educate them? The drug Company of course-not me after the fact.
So how do we get all this changed? Who do we have to contact, petition, to see that there is a change? I can't do this alone.

The only thing I can think of is to lobby people in this forum and any other dog forum that anybody knows about to start a letter writing campaign. If there are enough voices raised, the drug company will be forced to do something. Also, people could talk to their own vets and ask about their experiences with adverse effects to this drug. I am going to Call my own vet to ask him about ProIn.

Not sure if I chose the correct post area but here goes anyway.
Was searching the internet today and came upon PRN Pharamcal, the company the distributes ProIn..
Check this out: Proin - PPA for Control of Urinary Incontinence in Dogs
NOT ONE TIME do they mention any side effects, adverse reactions, not to be taken if....advice. Nothing! How criminal is this!!

I checked out the site mentioned above. There is a place to click to contact them. Phone # and EMAIL. I sent them this email:
I just read your advertisement on Proin-----Why do you not mention side effects!!!!! This killer of dogs should not even be on the market---It is killing dogs---Many dogs!!!!!!! Go to this site: Dog Forums - I-Love-Dogs - your Ultimate Dog Forum to get some information on this. Find the thread titled: Is Your Dog on Proin, Read This! This thread is in the Dog Health and Nutrition section/forum. How can you sleep at night?? You can come up with flimsy excuses on all this but we all know better!!! Greed-Greed-Greed and to he** with what happens to the dog!!! (Just came back in to 'modify' the he** word--Don't think it is allowed in this forum ---I did 'spell it out' though in my original email to that company!! Must have got through the 'filters' here because of it being a copy and paste thing!?? but thought I'd better 'change' it before the mods saw it and eliminate!)
Anyone else care to add their reply to this company? I am posting the page where it says how to contact them in the following post here----->

I will be writing a letter. BTW, a hard copy letter carries a lot more weight than an email. I urge everyone in the forum to take a few minutes to write to this company.

Thanks Lara's Mom,
I will post this info in every appropriate topic forum AND also when you write, ask why they advertise this: Dansk Veterinaer Tidsskrift Journal or the Dansk Veterniaertidsskriftl, a Danish journal, when quoting how effective it is. Maybe there is no documentation in the USA?
