Stray Voltage.
Last year in Toronto a number of dogs received shocks due to something that the hydro people refer to as stray voltage. One dog died and another came pretty close to it. A number of other dogs were shocked but were not seriously harmed.
This is apparently caused when there is snow and the sidewalks are salted. From what I understand, close by hydro poles there are small metal plate covers. When the conditions are right, dogs can receive mild to fatal shocks by stepping on or near these metal plates.
Toronto hydro spent a great deal of time and money last year checking each and every one of these plates and supposedly fixing the problem. Obviously, whatever they did didn't work because another dog got shocked just recently after a snowfall.
Is anybody else experiencing this where they live and, if so, how has it been dealt with? I have two little dogs and one senior larger dog and I'm afraid to walk them when there is snow on the sidewalk! I'd be very interested in hearing from anybody who knows about this menace or has been a victim of it. It scares the hell out of me!!!
