older dog pees on puppy
I have 2 dogs, 1 is 2 and the other is 5 months, the older dog pees over puppy i guess to show dominance, but it is very annoying , Its fine if they are both on leashes as i can stop the older dog but i would like to just leave them out off leash to go to the toilet without the puppy comming back inside stinking! would anyone have any advice as how to stop this behaviour from the older dog:???:

Can you put them out separately? That would manage the problem even if it didn't deal with your older dog's attitude. Is he definitely peeing on the pup or is the pup sticking his nose in where he shouldn't?

I can leave them out separately, but puppy looks very lonesome on his own. He is definitely peeing on him. I see him doing it (lifting the leg over him) I give out to the older dog but he wont leave him til he does this, It would be funny if it wasnt disgusting. I will have to leave them out separately, but wish that they could go out the back yard and just play without this happening.

Having them go out separately isn't the answer. That may cover up the problem but wouldn't solve it. Yes, this is a sign of dominance. The adult dog is establishing itself as the pack leader. How long have you had the puppy and how long has this been going on? If it hasn't been all that long, the puppy should eventually accept its role under the adult in the social pyramid/pack, and this behavior may stop on its own without intervention. Sometimes you just need to take a step back and let the dogs work things out for themselves, unless of course this creates a potentially destructive or dangerous situation for them or yourself. If things don't clear up within the next couple of months at most, here are some methods you could try;
When they go outside to use the bathroom, Keep the adult dog on a leash. When he attempts to pee on the pup, give him a leash correction and a strict verbal correction. When the adult uses the bathroom and doesn't go on the pup, reward it with positive reinforcement (which is very important) with a praising tone of voice as well as a toy or treat reward. Good Luck!
*Also, try not to pay more attention or show more affection to the pup. This can create jealousy or the idea that the pup is challenging for head of the pack. This can make matters worse.

Thanks todd
Thanks todd, i have the puppy now 4 months and for the first 3 months i have had the puppy on lead and if puppy pees older dog will sniff it out and pee over the ground where puppy been every time. I,ve tried them both on leads then and pull back on lead when older dog goes to pee over the ground where puppy been and give out to older dog which does work but i dont want to do this everytime they go out togeter. Its only when they are both out the back together that i catch older dog peeing on or marking i should say on puppy, whats worse is if they were in the house together in the kitchen older dog will start marking where puppy have been, they are both in the house in crates, and only left out into the kitchen one at a time because of this. I should say older dog was perfect before puppy came, but puppy is here now nearly 4 months and nothings changed!:???:

I say just keep doing what you're doing and remain patient and consistent. As I said before, this may stop with time. If all else fails, when your pup get a bit older it won't be very easy for the adult to pee on him anyhow. Just hope that the pup isn't a dominate dog as well and they decide to fight over social status.

Buster peed on Sammie once. I went over and knocked him down. He hasn't done it since.

if it helps to ease, with the number of dogs I have had over the years I have been pissed on numerous times. Even by dogs belonging to others. Nothing worse then to be barefoot, sitting and talking to someone and realize a warmth on your foot only to look down and see a dog with his leg hiked and urinating away like your foot is part of a fire hydrant.....

Although this has never happened to me, I've been to the dog park a few times and have seen a few big dogs urinating on some owners before. I probably shouldn't be saying this, but something about that cracks me up! As long as it's not me that is

I think you should spend more time with the old dog, so he/she will not feel like the bad one and the young is better, I think the old dog didn't like some behaviour, maybe other people are playing only with the young one, the old wants games too

Exactly. try not to pay more attention to the puppy or the adult dog may feel as if he needs to assert his dominance which he has already started doing (hence him peeing on the pup). You paying more attention to the pup make the adult dog feel as if the pup is challenging him for the alpha spot or as a higher member in the pack ranking system if you will.
