What's the dif?
What is the difference between someone who has a ton of pets and an animal hoarder? If I had as many animals as Yogi has, would I have a ton of pets or would I be considered a hoarder?

Is there a difference--Prob. depend on the person's mentality and why he has them! Someone who has a lot of pets and does so because he loves them and is rescuing is the better interpretation here. My dictionary --about the word hoarding, n. 1. precious HIDDEN accumulation.-----v.t. 2. accumulate and secrete.
A determining factor might be the word hidden!
LOL, just my thoughts!

In my estimation, a person who has a lot of pets is someone who still take proper care of all of them. An animaol hoarder is someone who has so many animals that they cannot properly take care of them all because of the sheer number of them. (EX: Poop and pee of the floors, fighting, pet hair all over the place, etc)

I agree. I think a hoarder just has animals all over the place that aren't cared for properly. No vet's or medical care, no groomer's or grooming usually, no knowledge or real experience involved, they don't even worry about spay and neuter so they may be breeding all over the place irresponsibly as well with little to no care given to the offspring, often can't even provide proper diet for all their animals, they just collect and collect and collect. They really don't stop to consider whether they can actually provide care to the animals in question or before adding another (they think they do), just keep them around because they love them but don't meet the rest of the commitments of ownership or realize the animals are suffering when they are. It's very sad.

We don't have poop and pee everywhere, but we do have pet hair on everything. I can sweep and two days later I will have a carpet of saint and cat hair on everything. Maybe I should vaccuum my pets. O.o

I have come to believe that food infused with dog hair enjoys improved flavour.

I cannot remember the last time I fixed something that didn't have a dog or a cat hair in it.

This is basically the correct answer.
A hoarder in fact is a collector that has no real regard for what it is they collect. ie: condition, care etc.
In my case which is not the norm for the record, I do not collect but mine are well cared for...I even have the vet bills to prove it..
The other thing to note and is commonly overlooked is that most people cannot deal truly with more than one or two pets. They are the ones most commonly running screaming that anyone with more than that must be some type of hoarder with out taking into consideration that just because they are not capable of dealing with more than one or two in no way implies there are not people out there who are.
I should have also added this...A hoarder does not know a limit with what they collect. Someone like myself will know and does know when enough is enough. This is not that difficult when in my case looking at the monthly costs determine the limit for me as well as the cost of vet care.

I also think an animal hoarder is someone who has so many animals that it restricts them in carrying out neccessary day to day activities.
Examples: Going to school, work, doctor appointments, etc.
Perfect example here;

That is almost beyond belief!!! Hoarders definitely need psychiatric help. Nobody in their right mind could live like that and subject so many animals to such filthy conditions.

I watched Hoarders. There was one lady on there that lived a few few blocks over from where I used to live. I remember driving past that house wondering "When are they going to condemn that place"?

I've watched the program but, I've never seen one that involved animals; just massive accumulations of junk. I seem to recall someone telling me that they are either going to begin incorporating animal hoarders on the show or have a new show devoted to them at some point.

Yea that would be interesting. They could have a new program like you're saying about animal hoarders in particular and run it on Animal Planet or something.
By the way, there actually is an episode of Hoarders that involves animals. Here is its official preview and when it ewill be playing. It's on A&E.
11 - Julie and Shannon
Monday, March 08th 10:00 pm ET
Tuesday, March 09th 02:00 am ET
Julie is living a nightmare. A series of tragedies triggered massive hoarding which in turn led to Julie's son moving in with her ex-husband. Now she must clean up or risk losing the two daughters that still live with her. Shannon, her husband Tim, and their four young children live in a house that is filled with garbage and infested with mice. Her dogs roam freely in the clutter and there's a two foot hole in the bathroom floor. She was devastated when Animal Control removed 20 cats from the home three weeks ago. Now, as cameras are rolling, police arrive at the front door with Child Protective Services to remove her children.

Thanks! Wrote the date down so I don't miss it. What I don't understand is how these people can stand the stench? If one of my brood uses the paper, I have to clean it up right away because it stinks. The stench in a home with so many animals must be appalling!!!

I agree 100%! I have a neighbor who has quite a few cats and they obviously pee all over the place because the entire house smells like urine. I'm starting to wonder if she's some sort of cat hoarder or just lonley

Do you mean that the inside of the house or the outside stinks? If she has any unspayed females in her home, every unaltered male for miles around will show up and spray there. Do you have any idea of how many cats this woman actually has?
