It's all instinct. Some people think that they do this to cover up their scent, but it's generally the polar opposite. The reason they do this after pooping or peeing is to spread their scent/mark their territory. Dogs just like cat's actually have scent marking glands on the pads of their feet, so they kick up dirt to show other dogs that they were there and to mark the territory as their own. Although this is most common in male dogs, my dog Lucky who is a female does this as well (not in the house though). Although this isn't a huge issue, you probably want to break your dog of this happen in the house. Don't worry about the dog doing it outside, that's fine, just not inside. You don't want the dog to think that YOUR house is HER territory. You need to establish yourself as the alpha member of the household. Again, don't worry about this behavior outside, but break the habit inside or she may feel as if YOUR house is HER territory. When she kicks her feet inside consider giving her a firm verbal command like "leave it" or "no" in a low tone of voice. Have her sit and stay for a minute or so after this to let her know you are in control. It may be more difficult to break her of this behavior inside and no outside because this could be confusing to her, however some patience and hard work will go a long way. Just do a simple google search on how to establish yourself as the alpha member of the household with your dog;
