Arrow Before You Board Your Dog

Everything you need to know and what you should look for when choosing a kennel for your pet. If your going on vacation why shouldn't they be? Advice from an experienced kennel worker.

5. When dropping your dog off, ask about the facilities exercise schedule. Play times, otherwise known as one on one with a staff member, very rarely get done. And if they do get done, not every dog will get taken out.
So if you choose this option there is a high possibility that your beloved pet will be left sitting in a kennel for your entire vacation. Daycare is a better option, the dogs get taken out every day with other dogs and staff members. In this case it is work the extra two dollars and the half an hour evaluation. Your pet will be healthier during their stay at the kennel and happier when they go home. There is also a less chance of them getting sick or developing kennel cough during their stay.

4. Ask about the kennel's feeding schedule, most kennels will feed morning and night. Including how often the fill waters, if they put beds down at night, how often they disinfect, and how they administer medication. Many kennels fail to put a bed down for every dog at night, making it easier for dogs to lose hair and develop anxiety. You also want to make sure they have trained people administering medication, if it is administered wrong, or the medications are given to the wrong dog, the reaction can be fatal. Another thing to check for is that water dishes are monitored. Not only refilled frequently but that the staff monitors all pets for bloat. Bloat is an extremely serious condition that is caused by eating and drinking to much water too quickly. It hardens the stomach, twists the intestines, and if it is not detect in time, it is fatal. By checking to see how often the kennel is disinfected will keep your pet healthier. A kennel should be disinfected both inside and outside once daily rain or shine. If it is not, it is not sanitary.
