Default Looking for advice and tips on why my Lab leaks

Hi I am not sure if iam in the right place but i am hoping someone can help me. I have a 14 month old Lab named Harlow. I have been worried sick about a little problem that she has that i hope someone can shed some light on for me. She leaks clear fluid after she runs when she's relaxing. I can walk her for hours with no problems but as soon as she runs and comes home she starts to leak. She has no idea it's happening. It's clear fluid with no odour. I have had her to the vet and a clean bill of health, blood work was done, urine samples were done and nothing showed. THIS ONLY HAPPENS AFTER SHE RUNS if she don't run for a week it won't happen. She's a Lab she loves to run after her toys, I don't want to take that from her but that's what I have been doing .. Has anyone ever heard of this?? The dog food she eats is Orijen she's about 65 pounds. She's a very happy dog, no other issues with her, I just can't run her. Hope someone can help. Thanks

Audrey

Default My Chocolate Lab leaks

We have a Chocolate Lab who is 12 and just started leaking in the last 6 months or so. Funny, I never expected to run into someone who calls it leaking too...I just figured in her case, it had to do with age. It happens for her at night on her doggie bed. Doesn't smell either. Odd that it is happening to both our labs. She is a cancer survivor too. She just keeps on going. Good luck. If you find out anything, I'd be interested to know...

I am no expert but I do have a very good home vet book. This could be caused by many different things. I can not post what all it says--Of course it all has to do with incontinence. I suggest you put words like dog/incontinence in your browser to find out these things. Here are the names of some kinds that you can check on too: (This one is the first one I would check on-->) #1.-- Incontinence from Overdistension of the Bladder

#2.--Neurogenic Incontinence
#3.--Hormone-Responsive Incontinence
#4.--Kidney Failure
#5.--Submissive Urination
#6.--Ectopic Ureters
#7.--Pelvic Adhesions--I will quote from my book on these last two (#s 6 and 7) They are listed under other causes of incontinence.
Quote: One or both ureters may enter the vagina instead of the bladder. There is then continuous drainage of urine into the vagina. The incontinence of ectopic ureter is present at birth.

Incontinence shortly after spaying is usually caused by postoperative pelvic adhesions. Both an ectopic ureter and pelvic adhesions are potentially curable by surgery. (End of Quote) Did you have your dog spayed?!

The main reason I am posting is to warn you about Proin--brand name for phenylpropanolamine which is prescribed for incontinence. Please read this entire long thread did in this forum on this killer drug:
Is your dog on PROIN? READ THIS!

Yes Harlow was spayed when she was 6months. I have had her on the stilbestrol but it didn't help. This only started with her about 2 months ago. Considering getting a ultra sound done to make sure nothing was messed up when she was spayed. Have no idea what else to do. The vet said to switch her food from the Orijen cause it was so high in protein, her blood work came back with 2 things elevated in her Kidney's but nothing to worry about. Could the food be the cause ??? Alot of people say vet's will always try to get you on there food but Origen and Acana is suppose to be the best she does very well on it, her coat is shiny and she looks very healthy. Anyone out there have issues with the Orijen ?? Still hoping someone can help

To me --this sounds like the most likely thing: Incontinence shortly (how shortly??--And I wouldn't rest heavily on that word) after spaying is usually caused by postoperative pelvic adhesions. Pelvic adhesions are potentially curable by surgery. (End of Quote) Did you have your dog spayed?! You could mention that to your vet and see what he thinks---Is that what an ultra sound would tell?

Can't help you on the dog food issue as I don't feed commercial dog food---raw feed and some home cooking. But my advise is not to go to the cheap, (and not so cheap) crappy brands the vets sell.

This is a good link about the subject on incontinence. (Be sure to scroll all the way down as ads get in between and fools you into thinking article is done!) Did the vet do urine analysis/readings---If not--Why not!? This could be the way to find out if this is caused by infections/diseases/stones, etc. Have you thought about seeing another vet? If you ever do see another vet---Ask the 1st vet for all the paperwork on what he has done/blood tests results--everything! You are entitled to that. I always get copies of any bloodwork/tests that are done and keep them in a file. You can compare the tests over time to see if things are changing--alerts you to things! Plus if you ever go to another vet or to an emergency clinic--You have valuable info to show.

The link: Incontinence in Dogs | Dog Time - Helping your dog regain controlAnd please ignore the sentence mentioning the Proin/phenylpropanolamine (BIG KILLER OF DOGS)
You mentioned that 2 of the readings on the kidneys were not normal----Could this be a clue to the start of a kidney problem/disease that could be causing this incontinence!! Here is a mention of this from the above link: It's important to check kidney function to make sure there's not another medical reason for your dog's accidents, such as a urinary tract infection, kidney infection, or diabetes.

Your vet will also do a urinalysis to check for the presence of any bacteria. Further tests, including blood work and X-rays, can rule out other health issues that may be causing the problem.
I hope this vet you have did a thorough job of ruling out any health issues that could be causing the problem. How long ago did you have the blood tests done ---maybe the kidney values have changed?! I would sure be cautious as like I said could be a clue to the start of kidney problems for which I would periodically check on---You would not want this to progress to chronic problems. My Corky had to be put to sleep because of kidney failure--due to heart disease. I don't wish to scare you--just want you to be aware of watching for indications--blood work is the way to keep an eye on this as it can creep up and you might not see any signs until too late. It can happen fast. Is your dog drinking a lot of water or more then usual--Could be a sign of kidney problems. Am also wondering about meds you have used---some can be hard on the kidneys!

STILBESTROL Note the side effects esp. if too much used----Can even cause leakage!

And please ignore the sentence mentioning the Proin/phenylpropanolamine (BIG KILLER OF DOGS)

audrey99, dugogota,

Hope both of your friends are doing better. Just truly be aware that ProIn can kill them and some it can kill fast.

Let us know how they are doing.
