Smile Wolves

So about an hour and half away from where i live there is a place called Wolf Park. Where u can go and listen to the wolves howl. Take classes adn even meet the wolves! I was on there website watching some videos of some of the current wolves they have; and i had my dog Ella in the computer room with me. When she heard those wolves howling she was so curious! She was watching the computer screen and tilting her head like she was thinking "what is going on?" she would bark and sniff the screen adn speakers. it was so hilarious! She thinks shes tuff stuff!

I tell u what though if u want to learn about dogs study wolves. If u have multiple dogs u can learn so much about the packing order adn why they do the things they do.

For example: have u ever had one of ur dogs lick one of ur other dogs mouth? I had seen that before and thought it was pretty gross, but it is a submissive act. So the dog doing the licking is submitting to the other dog. Theres tons of little things that we dont even see that are very important in a pack. By knowing these things it can really help u raise a happy healthy dog and help u be the dominate one in ur pack.

Just thought id share some of the things i have learned. Thanks!

Haha, I love it when dogs react to sounds from the computer!

There are coyotes near me (I'm scared of them because I have a tiny dog...I keep her on a short leash at all times). When they howl at night, my dog Tiffany jumps up, runs to the window, and barks.

omg.. i was out one evening walking my dog and 2 coyotes came running up to me and my dog. It seriously scared the heck out of me!! So i picked up my dog and started screaming at the coyotes and they ran away. Now i make my hubby take our dog out for her evening walks... she gets several a day. And i carry pepper spray when i walk her during her day walks. It was pretty scary, there not very big but still there scary!

Eek! I once was walking Tiffany during the day. I got back home and turned into my driveway, and there was a coyote standing right there. I couldn't see it as I came up because there are bushes along the side of my driveway. I freaked out and picked Tiffany up. It walked away after I made some noise but agh it was scary!

A number of years ago I worked at a zoo and cared for a pack of wolves. They could be right behind you and you would never hear them! They are amazing and complex animals.

I have a pic I happened to take as my 10 mon. (at the time) younger cocker was 'kissing' my cocker/golden (both males). I figure he was just kissing to be affectionate or maybe to wake him up---The cocker/golden was sleeping off by himself at the time. I can tell you the cocker was not being submissive either as he has 'taken after' the other dog many times. You can see that pic in my album on my profile page! He looks to be being affectionate (to me) and I smile when I see that pic. Maybe there is more than 1 reason why they do this!

My aunt rescued a wolf when I was very young. They don't make great pets, but this girl was spoiled beyond belief and raised on an orchard farm where she had total reign, just her and her humans. I wasn't allowed to be alone with her because she was wild and rough, but she was also very sweet. I remember the horse vet having to come to her farm because she couldn't/wouldn't take 'Dog' (what a great wolf name, right?) anywhere. She made it about twice as long as a wild wolf could expect, about 17 years.

Another great way to see canine 'language' is tail position. We actually had an exam just on tail positions in my intro Bio course.

I know they would never make great pets, at least i would definitely never have one but i just think there interesting. Ive noticed tail position and also ear position is a good way to tell what there saying. I love learning about all the different ways dogs can communicate and determine packing order its just so interesting. One of the biggest things that has helped me with my dog is if shes trying to be dominate over me i lay her on her back until she submits. Its more effective then time out or yelling or anything. My dog is not a dog that needs to be yelled at, she cares so much about being good. I yelled at her one time, more bc i was scared or what she was doing, but i NEVER did that again she was devasted!! But putting her on her back lets her know she shouldnt do whatever she did without being mean.

Well Maybe they just love each other and were kissing cute pic. The submission was just what i have learned i didnt mean it was the only reason why dogs do that, i dont pretend to be a dog expert...

Sorry if I sounded 'harsh'---Wasn't meant that way---I just always wondered about my 2 ---I could never figure out why my 2 did this as Most of the time Max (the kisser) was (the kissee was Corky--no longer here-had to be put down) jealous of Corky and most of the time I felt Max didn't care if Corky was even around let alone being so affectionate at that time! But Max was/is a jeckle-hyde personality (incorrectly spelled). Max would never get after Corky if Corky started eating Max's food but anything else and Max was all over Corky--acted ready to kill, lol, but meek as a lamb on the food issue--GO figure! It upsets me that Max never even showed one little sign of missing Corky when he left---They were together for nearly 11 years. Hey I am always saying I am no expert, lol, if I was --guess I wouldn't need to be in this forum.

Angie, Kudos for figuring out the pinning your dog down to establish dominance instead of yelling. That is so much nicer. I wish everyone was as devoted a pet owner as you.

I have friends and family who simply give animals away or take them to the pound when they get bored of them. It infuriates me. My sister in law asked me if she could buy a puppy from me and I told her I would never trust her with one of my animals.

I feel the Lord gave us dominion over the 'beasts of the field,' and with that comes HUGE responsibility. Pets are for life.

My two dogs are still getting to know each other & I can't figure out who is going to be the dominant one. They both lick each other's mouth at the same time, so that doesn't help. Popcorn is more food aggressive. Kibbles is more lap aggressive. I suppose they will figure it out without my help!
