They are gorgeous. I would like to have one, but I think our 2 year old is safer with saint bernards. My brother had an akita that hated little kids. That has always worried me about them.

I think that one concerns many a potential owner. We have found Kato to be wonderful with our daughter, the sweetest, and ever so gentle and patient play mate with her, but is not tolerant of children outside of our family. I know of several other akita owned families that have found the same thing, wonderful with their own, but needs to be watched with outside children.

WE'll just be safe and stick with our saints. They love all children equally and would rather see children passing by on the street than anything else. Buster's enthusiasm at seeing other children has scared some kids, but he just wants to play with them.

Thanks Yogi,I agree they're real beauties...Nattie you're right,h has gotten much lighter and Lunar while they're not all that way it is common for Akita's not to like children especially smaller ones.

In truth, even Miniature Pinschers do not do small children well. Great for teenagers, but small children are generally too loud and too grabby.....

I've seen that with a lot of the ones I've trained...Akita's tend to be good with kids in their own family but not strange ones...All off mine always did well with my kids and grandkids but wanted no part of their friends1

Wow they are beautiful parents!! Is the white one the mother? Such a gorgeous face! They both look so nice & big. I love seeing all the different colors & patterns that an Akita can be. Wish I could get one of each
I'm still a newbie to Akitas, but Kuma seems to adore everyone including kids. She just turned 5 months tho..so not sure if that will last.

Dad who's call name is Winter is the white one...Akita puppies almost always like kids...If there's going to be a change in that it usually won't happen until closer to adulthood...Mind you there are always exceptions to the rule...I've had and know many Akita's who adore kids but always be careful and no matter how much they may seem like they love kids never, ever leave them alone with them...Granted this should be the case with any small child and a dog but with Akita's this really applies and that's to say even with older a kids!

You're absolutely right, Rees. As sweet as she can be, I can't fall into trusting her alone or ever off leash. Fortunately, I've always done the same with my current & past dogs. If company is over they are on leash or crated inside. Lhasa or Akita..doesn't matter in this house.

Keeping her on a leash with company over is a good idea but really I wouldn't suggest crating an Akita in that situation and here's why.. Akita's are natural guard dogs and are by nature wary of strangers. First and foremost you want her socialized with people you trust...Secondly because of this nature confining them can backfire on you...When you do that it keeps them from doing what comes natural to them and that's to protect you...
I've seen a few things happen with this...I knew one Akita who bit her owner because she was trying to put her in the bedroom when company came and she was not at all aggressive but she felt like the owner was preventing her from doing her job of checking out who was in the house even though she knew and liked the person so in turn she snapped at her owner to prevent her from doing so...
The other problem that can arise is because they are by nature wary of people that are not their family, When you crate them or put them behind closed doors when company comes they can interpret that as their instincts are right in being wary of this person and in turn can actually make them feel aggression towards the person..
My Akita's have always been a loud to stay in the living room when family or friends are over all though they were required to lay down and not bother anyone...I did remove them and put them in the bedroom or outside though when someone such as a cable guy would come over to do service because for one thing they were usually scared to death of them, but for another they were complete strangers and being they would be in the home and messing with the T.V lets say and Akita's consider everything their property they could easily misinterpret what the persons intentions were, or if they maybe got to near to me,all of this being a recipe for disaster!
So just be careful about things like that.

Thanks for the advice, Rees! I appreciate any feedback I can get & will take your advice to heart. We don't crate when people are visiting us inside our home. When we have visitors over it's usually a couple nieces & nephews for sleep overs or just my parents. So Kuma would stay on leash until bedtime.
Our home is too small to accommodate most of our family or friends so we stick to hosting big bbq's outdoors. We've always crated during these times because they're all day parties & we can have well over 50 guests. We do have a big yard. But because of how hectic it can be w/so many, it's easier for the people & dog(s) to crate. I'll definitely keep your words in mind come next Spring!
