Default Lake/River Safety

Hi,

my friends and I are saving up to purchase a canoe for next spring. There is a lake in the middle of our city that is frequented by stand up paddle boarders, canoers, kayakers, and people with their dogs. I see dogs of all sizes on the canoes or kayaks with their owners and even some in the water. Some of the big dogs are fetching tennis balls thrown into the lake and in the areas where people are swimming (I don't swim, I'm terrified of getting bitten by something) they have their small dogs with them in the water. Someone tossed around the idea that maybe I should buy my pug a life jacket and bring her along with us to the lake. I know she'd sink without a vest, and to tell you the truth, I wouldn't allow her off of the canoe without adequate adult supervision I see all the dogs at the lake having so much fun with their owners, and wanted to know what are the dangers and health risks that these dogs are facing? I am afraid of creepy crawlies infecting my little one, is there a high risk of her contracting something from the lake water? I'm a very strong swimmer (varsity swim team) and would jump in after my dog if I had to, and I would keep my dog on the canoe for the most part, but it is inevitable that she will be in the water at least a few times. Would it be a good idea to take my pug with me next time we go canoeing next spring?

There are life jackets for dogs. I would suggest you get one and also, make sure your dog is current on all shots before going on trips like this.
