Smile Flying and my dog

Can anyone tell what the best way to fly dog without having to pay extra or to crate my dog, and have him on the plane with me the whole ride? I would like to know because I want to fly from LAX to BWI for the holidays.

Well, nowadays, you have to crate all animals on an airplane. When I had my chihuahua, he went to Russia with me. I took him as a carry-on and he rode under the seat in front of me. But I'm not sure if you can do that anymore. You might still be able to if you have a small dog. If you have a large dog, you need to have it in an airline approved crate and it cannot ride in the cabin with you. What kind of dog do you have?

What about these service dog things i have been seeing? They say you can go on to there site and Drop $300 on a vest and ID and you can fly your dog with you on the plane and it wont cost a thing. Have you herd about this? I just found it online today. Ive never herd of anything like this before. I wonder if it works?

You could do that, but I have a problem with people doing that. If people keep abusing the system like that, then it will become more difficult for people with real disabilities to have actual service dogs acompany them.

If you want my 2 cents on the best way to do it, though, I would do it legitimately (albeit underhandedly) by convincing your Dr. you need your dog as a therapy dog or you cannot fly. It would be legal and cheaper. The sites that provide the identification are not legal. The ADA act forbids private companies to require you to show proof of a disability, but law enforcement can certainly require it - and that could mean a serious fine if you're busted.

If I did do that, it would be legitimately. I have been Bi-Polar for years. I just never knew there was something like that out there. I think its neat. If you use it the right way. I can see it helping a lot of people.

So true about the first part.

Thanks for posting this.

I've been struggling with obsessive compulsive disorder and paranoia since middle school. It doesn't effect my life as much as it used to, but if I had to travel with my dog, I will try this. I'm not trying to use the system, and haven't thought of this until you brought it up. I've honestly worried about traveling by plane with my dog, so much that I've compared airline policies and I'm not even flying anytime soon. It would cause me great distress if I couldn't fly with my dog or if she had to get put into cargo.
