I have a delima...
There was a great pyrenees that was picked up not too far from my house. Someone called the dog warden. I do wish they would quit doing that. When they are picked up by the warden they are put to sllep if they aren't picked up by their owners or adopted in 4 days after getting there. But anyways, nobody has claimed this obviously purebred beautiful dog and it has 3 days left before euthanasia. They estimate him to be aroung 8 months old. They adoption fee is $28.00 and tags are $16.00. From the pics, he already looks bigger than Buster. I seriously want to go and adopt him if nobody claims him. I don't want to see this big, white, furry teddybear be put to sleep. You know me and my gentle giants. I know Ryan will kill me if I go get this really hairy, adorable doggie. And he is REALLY hairy. I think he has more hair than any of my saints. So, for the next couple of days, I need to lots of research. I wonder if a pyrenees needs are any different than a saints. I do hope the owner claims him so Ryan won't have to get mad at me for bringing him home.

Luna, I have to go to my daughter's like an hr. ago but going to reply here really quick--I don't want to see that poor dog die either. Maybe you could take it and put an ad in the paper to try to find the owner---If you do ---make them pay for all the expenses. If you don't find the owner---Try finding another home for it---Craig's List for one or your local paper, etc. Don't fall in love with it---You don't need another dog!!! You are a sweetheart--You know that?!

ah, what a cute giant.....
If I remember correctly, both breeds are very similar in attitude and requirements. I would jump on him or at least let them know that if he is not
claimed by the time allotment to notify you and you will take him. I know Ryan will be upset, at first......you will just need to weather the storm...

Awww, he's beautiful.
If you can't keep him long term, maybe you can contact a breed rescue? You could offer to foster while they look for a new home for him.

I called them and did exactly that. They said that since he's such a nice gentle and obedient dog, they were going to hold him for a few weeks to see if anybody claims him. They said he REALLY likes to chew. Other than that, he is a gentleman. They believe he was kept outside and was used as a working dog. They found him with horsefeed and hay in his coat. But they said it wouldn't be too much of a problem housebreaking him, since he is used to going outside anyways. They said he hasn't gone in his kennel once since he's been there, but that doesn't mean he's house broken. They think he's been kept with horses. I did read up and they have more of a tendency to guard than saint bernards, but they are really great with people and children. But that's what they were bred for, guarding their flock. I told them I would call them in a few days and see if anybody has picked him up. They told me not to worry, they weren't going to have him put to sleep because he is obviously well mannered and well taken care with no signs of abuse whatsoever. They did call a few people to see if they would foster him and they haven't gotten any calls back yet.
If nobody claims him, I think I will go and get him and call him Friday. Doesn't he look like a Friday? He looks like he's glad to be off of work and relax for the weekend.

My sister in law had a great Pyrenees... They are AMAZING dogs. We are involved with a rescue group for pyreness and it does take a special person to own this kind of dog. They tend to do better in a home where they are the only dog, but that also depends on how they have grown up.. if theyve always been around other dogs then it shouldnt be a problem. They were originally breed to protect farm animals from wolves and other intruders so being a loyal protector makes sense. They do get frustrated easily so this isnt a dog for small children. They gain weight very easy and it is VERY bad for them to be over weight. My sister in laws dog, Annabell was her name, had arthritis when she was 5 years old and had a really hard time on hard floors. Also they do require a lot of grooming.. but as long as u keep up with it, youll be fine.
As long as u are willing to put in the training i think u would do great with a Pyrenees. They do tend to have a "whatever" attitude. Good luck trying to resist those eyes though.

Aw, Luna you're such a sweetheart! He does look like a fine young boy. Who knows, maybe he can wear down Buster for you if you end up keeping him.

We have 3 saint bernards, and one has severe hip dysplasia. I go great lengths to make sure none of them are overweight. And I understand the grooming part. They have a ton of hair like my saints. Maybe even more. The pound did say that he has no problems at all with any other dogs there. He likes to play with them a lot, but they aren't sure about cats because the pound doesn't keep cats. We do have a 2 year old, but she isn't all grabby like most kids are. She does climb all over Buster, but if he wasn't so good about it, I wouldn't let her. I never let her climb all over Sammie. But just in case, I do plan to take her to see how the dog does with her before I decide to bring it home, if nobody claims it.

Now that irresistible face of Annabell makes me think of the new member that wanted to find a Golden like the one she saw where she groomed dogs----This face has the same gentle look!

I haven't met a pyrenees that doesn't have that look. Several years ago when we were looking for our first saint bernard, we couldn't find any. Our second choice was a newfie or a great pyrenees. Those were the three breeds we picked out. Then we came across Sammie and she is the nicest doggie in the world that doesn't cause an ounce of trouble. That's why we ended with with Buster, to give us problems we don't need. I like Annibel. She looks almost like the doggie in the pound. All white with light grey ears.

Luna, you truly have a heart of pure gold!!! No doubt an absolutely beautiful dog. I'd ask myself the following questions: Can I afford another huge dog? Do I have sufficient room for another huge dog? Do I have sufficient medical insurance for the constant injuries these huge dogs so often seem to cause me? Will Ryan pack up and leave if you bring another dog home?

Ryan said we can have it. We just have to wait for the pound to get it back. It jumped the fence and people have called in with sightings of it, but nobody's brought it back. I hope it comes back safe. Yes, we can afford the dog. I quit smoking, and it's saving us $200.00 a month. I figure that is enough to keep him. We have the room, just not in bed. I guess they will all have to take turns. If the pund gets him back, I will have to crate him at night. He likes to chew. My insurance has covered everything my dogs have thrown at me. And most of the crap that I have managed to do to myself. (Yesterday I had to go get some stitches. I was cutting an apple for the little person and sliced my hand open. Seven stitches.) No Ryan won't pack up and leave. He is actually looking forward to having another male around the house. He is swamped with females. Buster doesn't really count. Ryan thinks Buster is dumber than a box of rocks. And he is, but we won't tell him that.

LUNA! LUNA! LUNA! What can I say! I sure hope that dog gets back safe too. And if you get this dog---I am sure we are going to hear many more 'interesting/funny' things--And not because this new dog is (OMG!--dread the thought!) anything like Buster but because of Buster's antics and how he is going to use this new dog for more tricks! Like Lara(Tara) said --Never a dull moment! Let us know of any updates on this dog getting back safely--I know you will.

Gosh hes booootiful, the Pyrenees was on the very short list of our breeds, litterally the final one, it was either that or an Akita............the only deciding factor ended up being that the life expentency of the Pyre was so short in comparison to the Akita.........but that ended up being the only deciding factor, up until that point, they both ticked every single box we had.

Ohhh! I really hope the pound get's him back for you! And friday's a PERFECT name for him! LOL I LOVE Pyrs, I rescued one (well he was a mix) last summer, he was the most laid back, relaxed guy EVER!!! and flipping ADORABLE. I really wanted him... but he's a bit over the condo limit of 18" LOL We didn't have room for him in our rescue, so we found another rescue to take him in. He's been adopted
Woops, I shoulda read the rest of the posts before I commented! Congrats on Porter!!!
