Adopt a pet month
October is adopt a pet month so if you're looking to get a new puppy or dog please save a life and go to your local shelter or rescue and give them a new forever home.
While there are a few of us who breed and have bred and some of us have gotten our puppies from reputable breeders because we wanted a specific breed, we all support and promote adopting or rescuing.
Also make sure to spay/neuter your pets so that we can help to cut down on all of the puppies/dogs that are homeless,in shelters and getting euthanized in alarming numbers!

You definitely don't need to tell me, I have 18 rescues.

You're so awesome Yogi!!.. I have to admit if I had the land and a big enough house I'd probably have enough to fill up a shelter...All though hubby would most likely lose his mind since at least half would be Akita's and he can barely deal with Seigi..LOL

In all honesty, a true reputable breeder has to hold some responsibility other than just the breeding aspect. I rescue those of my breed that are not purchased from me but from other breeders who do not put the potential pet owner through a rigorous question and answer segment to weed out those not qualified. Most dogs that come to me are those that simply put, the owner was not aware of their energy level and their tenacious attitude not to mention difficulty in house training. All these people saw was a cute little dog that looked like a "little Dobe" which when I hear that, I escort them to the door.
Breeders need to take an pro-active role in rescues especially with regards to their own breeds. They owe it to the breed and the dogs. Unfortunately, most do not believe in this. Luckily there are some like Norma with Bluehen Kennels out of San Bernadino who I got my Blue and Tan from. She has anywhere from 25 to 40 Miniature Pinscher rescues in her kennels at a time. She took one in from a young GI who was heading to Afghanistan. He wanted her to find the dog a new home since he was going to be gone a year. She offered free of charge to keep him til he returned but he declined feeling it was more important that the dog go to someone who would be there for it always. This woman is 80 years young and still going strong.

My breeder has quite a few rescues as well...One who isn't even a year old because the owner decided he didn't want him because his ears were still dropped..Well Barb taped his ears and after a little over a month his ears are up...I also took in rescues when I was breeding and sadly it's because the owners didn't realize their instinct to guard so being they didn't socialize them they had a tendency to be people aggressive...Then there were the ones who would get an Akita while owning a few cats..Akita's and cats are generally not a good mix so when the dog killed the cat the dog was no longer wanted.

I adopted a great pyrenees on Wednesday. He is adorable. And he is a very good doggie. All of my dogs, except Buster, was adopted. He came from a breeder. Maybe that's what's wrong with Buster.

LOL...My rescue Akita's were always so much better as far as behavior then the ones I bred and Seigi coming from a breeder is no different...My rescues were so grateful to have a forever home that they never stopped showing their appreciation with love and attention..
Seigi like the others is a royal, stubborn, obnoxious pain in my butt lol...I'll admit it though I love him to pieces anyway and actually love his self entitled, stubborn, pain in the butt personality!

Buster doesn't act like that, thank goodness, but he has got to be one of the stupidest dogs I have ever owned. This new doggie we adopted is VERY intelligent. And he's an escape artist.

Seigi is very intelligent however he does a great job at pretending he's as dumb as a box of rocks. Especially when he's done something wrong...As for escaping akita's are known for it but usually not try it until a year old or so...Not Seigi, nope he started a 4mths old!

I don't think Buster is smart enoguh to pretend anything. He gets busted red-handed at everything he does wrong. As for the new doggie liking to escape, great pyrenees are used to roaming and guarding large territories. So he just want out to expand. They have no concept of, no, that belongs to the neighbors. I should name him after a Russian czar or soemthing. He certainly wants to expand his territory.

Don't feel bad..Akita's think everything belongs to them no matter if it's inside or out right down to the mail box and the street in front of the house!

You think this is only an Akita trait. Try having 18 Miniature Pinschers. They were bred as feral dogs. You can only imagine what it is like when they lay claim to the HOUSE literally. Even the new pups are having a problem fending off each other for the toys in the pen only to be confronted by the older ones thinking the toys should be theirs. A lot of very sharp teeth being exposed on a regular basis. Heck, half the time when I pull out the chews, all hell breaks lose. I have to have them in their crates first and even then they are growling at each other. Bunch of idiots....
