I'm adopting another Deaf Dachshund!!!
So i was browsing around on petfinder a couple of weeks ago, and lo and behold I come across a 6 yo deaf/vi Double Dapple Mini Dachshund... I was going to post the link for you all to see his pics, but I haven't posted enough yet.
SO NOT FAIR!!! why does there have to be another Deaf and VI Double Dapple Mini Dachshund??? and not too far away! I mean, if he was in NY, I could pass him up as being too far away, but NOOOO he has to be in the State I adopted Mouse from, so i have a network already to get him to me in Central Alberta! So after much thought/arm twisting/convincing/denile/and arguments all with myself, I decided he is too perfect to pass up. He will be boarding a plane, in a fancy carry-on bag, at the end of the month. I only have 4 weeks to go!!! So he'll be deaf dog #3, Dachshund #2, VI dog #2, American dog #3, white dog #4, and dog #5.
He will be getting a new name... not sure yet what it is, but I am shortlisting names as we speak, and all day every day! LOL
I am a sucker for punishment....
I really need to stay off Petfinder....
But I can attach a pic!

You are so good, adopting all these needy dogs! And he is quite 'striking' looking. I'm prob. going to slap myself when you tell me what VI stands for?! Let us know how things go ---How he likes his new home, etc. And his name when you decide on one. You could prob. 'write' on your experiences with so many deaf dogs--Have plenty of pointers for others that have dogs that go deaf. Good luck with the new addition!
Hey! You could name him Cat. (Cat and Mouse!) And the coat color kind of looks like a cat too. Hey I was kind of joking here but now I think I am serious.

That dog is really really pretty!! I love deaf dogs... its really fun to teach them signs. Its just automatic for me to use hand signals as well as commands. But my dog responds better to my hand signals most of the time. Good luck!

Ha Ha Ha on the name! I have been given a couple ideas along this line... Trap or Mickey LOL! Cat is a funny name tho, it's now in the running! along with Marvin (the Martian as my sister calls Mouse the alien dog... LOL), Walter, Norman, Pockets, Critter and Boo (Radely from "to Kill a Mockingbird") I usually name my dogs after Literary Characters, and I already have Scout from the same book... and Boo is cute! he acts like a grumpy old man, so i was also trying to come up with grumpy old man names...
As to what VI stands for, Visually Impaired. He has starburst Pupils, which means he is quite nearsighted. Mouse has one starburst pupil, and one dropped and starburst... but that eye also looks like it has another pupil, and I dont think she sees much outta that eye at all. She's also EXTREMELY light sensitive, and really tough to get a pic of her with her eyes open. I'll attach a pic of Mouse's weird eye... incase you want to see what I'm talking about
I'm not good for adopting these dogs, I learn way more from dogs with issues, than "Normal" dogs LOL. And, I prefer deaf dogs. I find them easier to train, more connected and bonded with me, and better looking, TBH

Most dogs respond better to body language than voice to begin with. Training a hearing dog, you lure them into a sit to start then add in the command after... deaf dogs, you just skip the last step! I really really do perfer deaf dogs... and I'd really like a deaf pitty, or great dane next, but I will adopt whatever dog finds me, when i am ready for another dog, tho i wasn't even thinking about adopting another dog this time around... it just happened!

Yes, Danes come in Double merle, they also come with the same problems attached with the double merle genes. in ANY breed of dog that can be merle, if you breed 2 together, you will get 1/4 of the pups that are "double Merle/Dapple" and a high percentage of those will be deaf or blind or both. Both Mouse and my new dog are double Merle/Dapples (Dachshunds are called Dapple, but it's the same thing) and both are deaf and both have some vision impairment too.
this colour may be striking, but it comes with a whole host of issues, and unless you're like me and prefer adopting "special" dogs, dont ever get pups from people who breed for Doubles. Danes also have Harlequin, which is a derivitave of Merle, and a Harle-Harle, and Harle-Merle (called Merlequin) will have the same issues. I rescued and transported a double harle dane who was deaf and almost totally blind to a rescue in WA a couple of years ago. He was STUNNING!!! the funny thing is, He had one coloured ear, like Mouse, and it was the same ear! then the spring after, the same rescue e-mailed me to see if I wanted Mouse! it was pretty funny.
Deaf dogs are my passion, they really can do anything that a hearing dog can do!

Hey! Glad you liked the name idea. I like the Mickey idea too but not the Trap! Keep us posted when you do decide on a name!
Thanks for the info on what VI stands for--I would never of guessed but it makes perfect sense.
And you are too!-- GOOD--for adopting these needy dogs that a lot of people would not adopt. Just because you prefer these dogs does not make it any less 'GOODER!' And Like I figured--You know from experience, good info on these dogs---I learned things I didn't know just from your last post.
Checked your 3 last pics. Great pics, esp. the 2nd one. Can't really say that about the 1st pic. I guess but it was informative!
Talk to you later. Great job!!

Wow, he's stunning! And I like the names you're thinking of....especially Boo!
Thank you for taking these dogs in! I volunteer at the local shelter, and they had a deaf dog in recently. Her name was Annie and they think she was a poodle/jack russel mix. Sweetest little dog EVER. I was seriously thinking about adopting her but she was still a puppy and I'd do better adopting an older dog.

Thanks. I love educating people about deaf dogs, so anytime I have someone interested, I go at it!

JRT's are commonly deaf due to the ticking in their coat. It is caused by uneven pigment which then can cause lack of pigment in the inner ear, which causes deafness. Dalmatians and ACD's also are prone to deafness because of this issue. Scout is a PRT x as far as I can tell, and has a ticked coat (little red spots all over her) and she's completely deaf.
Most of us who adopt a deaf dog will not stop at one... they're addictive. Someone once told me, they're like the chip... I bet you cant have just one! So true!
