About My New Rescue Girl
Haven't got her yet, but she is on her way to my state as we speak. She is a golden retriever/cocker spaniel mix.---the mix I was looking for--same as my Corky! Saved her in the nick of time--would have been gassed this morning! She is coming from a high kill shelter in Ohio. Was just informed that she has kennel cough. And it worries me that her immune system is compromised right now and the shelter she is being brought to here in WI. will have to spay, give shots including the rabies shot in a week or so---Just too taxing on her all at once! And all the trauma of being moved around so much too!
She is a pretty dog and the shelter said she is between one and two yrs. old. I would post her pic if I knew how---Picture is in an email---I may figure it out but my mind isn't working too good right now---Have a fever and feel like h*ll---Got cellulitis--again! I just finally had to talk about her here--been holding off until I knew she was going to be mine and was holding my breath hoping she didn't get gassed before she got out of that place!
Will keep you updated as I hear more----Boy this is going to be different for me--Haven't had this young a dog for a long time! And not sure how Max-the 11 yr. old cocker is going to take it. Suppose she will need to be potty-trained too. I don't think I dare switch her to raw feeding until she has her immune system 'back up'---Going to be interesting to see Max getting raw and she will be on commercial dog food!
I hope she is a cuddler--Max is not so much--He growls if you even go to pick him up. She is described as sweet!

If she wanted some laughs, she could have had Buster.

Now Luna, you know you wouldn't give Buster up! But I am hoping she is a lap dog. Been trying to think of names for her already without even seeing her. The person I am working with to get her, Marti, had suggested Kismet but I don't like the way it sounds or feels 'coming out of my mouth--although I like the meaning of the word. I have 2 names I am thinking about but will need to see her and get a feel for her personality. Two names are Honey (coloring for 1 thing and if she is sweet like she is being described) and Willow.

I like Willow. If you name her Honey and call it at the dog park, I think half of the dog park would come running. At least it's not Chewbacca.

[B] Just got another email from Marti about the little girl. I had asked her for the name of the shelter that she is coming from and she sent me a link to the shelter and my little girl so I am giving the link that Marti gave me so you can see a couple pics. of her. This is the 1st time I have seen the face front view. I like the side view that I have seen before the best. I don't know how I could of missed noticing the tail--It is nothing that a cocker or golden would have--Looks curled to me! What do you guys think of the breeds she could be mixed with? As everyone knows-- I would want her no matter what all she is! But it is still nice to know for health, etc. reasons if nothing else.
Luna, you being from Ohio--Have you heard of this high kill shelter before? It is called Scioto County Dog Pound in Portsmouth, Ohio. How far are you from there?
Just done a little detective work on the net and guess you are 128.5 miles from Portsmouth! A little ways but knowing you and rescuing--you may have been to this rescue place!?

Portsmouth is 4 hours from me, across the river from Kentucky. I have heard of the shelter, but have never been there.
And it's a dog pound. It's not a shelter. We have a dog pound too. It's right next door to the shelter.

Well my little girl is with the rescue in Wi. Marti just sent me pics in an email. Will try to post them here--Not sure I got them 'ready/right' --to my files but will see when I try here after I finish 'yacking!' Lol, she is nothing like I imagined as far as being a cocker/golden mix! Hope these pics take here as I need a lot of help trying to figure out what she really is!!! She is full grown and only weighs 21 lbs and is 16 inches-shoulder down! Got to be a smaller breed in there then a cocker or a golden. And her tail does curl. But isn't she beautiful!? She looks pretty healthy to me with having kennel cough and just had a 'bunch' of shots all at once (including the dreaded rabies shot) and all the stress she must of had on her in the past days at the pound, etc. Lol! I think she looks like she can handle my Max's attitude if he starts messing with her. Marti says (Finally got to talk to her on the phone) she is sweet, friendly--not scared. Must of been picked up as a stray because no info on her at all from the Ohio pound where she was trucked from. But Marti says she must of had a home as she is so well behaved and friendly--walks on leash well and may even be housebroken. Didn't mind the crate she was in that Marti drove her over 175-200 miles to get to her house. And she is in a crate now at Marti's place as with her having kennel cough--can't have her near the other 22 dogs she has right now and some are special care dogs too. Does this scene of 22 dogs and some are rescue sound like somebody else we know well, lol! And she isn't doing bad with the kennel cough right now but is sneezing some. Well time to see if the pics took. I have got a lot of house cleaning and rearranging to do before Marti comes with her and does the home inspection required--A lot of cleaning OUT, period---I am a pack rat and hardly ever throw anything away--lived here 20 yrs and small house--doesn't help either. Lol, I started to say I may not be in forum that much for a while--too busy and I'm not sure how long it will be before she comes. Then again--you never know--I might have to get in here and yack some more about the little girl!!
Hooray I got it to work!! Now for a few more-- Hope I don't repeat some--didn't have any captions on them (Screw-up? or what!!)--Hey, I'm just happy I got some pics here at all, lol.

She is very pretty. She does look like a shiba mix with the tail going over her back like that. She also looks so little!! I can't wait until you get her!

Not Good News!
I am so letdown! I am not getting my rescue dog after all. The adoption committee decided I wasn't the 'PERFECT' Parent! Here is a copy of the email I got and my reply----Pretty much tells it all. But I am still looking for a dog but not from a RESCUE!!!-----

Hi Marti,
Well, I figured my chances were slim to none, but it still hurts like h*ll! I still think that I would of made the best mom for Honey.
I have some food for thought that I hope you will pass on to the adoption committee/rescue organizations. As you know I was concerned in the beginning with all the stress (Rabies shot, other shots, spaying----everything that would compromise her immune system). I wondered how many extra shots she might be getting that she already had. When you get right down to it---She should of had titers done to see if she needed these last shots since in her young life she more than likely had way too many of the same shots given way too close together. So I feel that because these titers are costly to do---They weren't done. Her immune system is going through a rough time and all these possibly multiple shots can cause many problems---cancer, other diseases down the road as her immune system is not healthy right now!
I (and many others) think that trying to adopt thru a Rescue Organization is very hard to do---too many 'rules!' Because these rules are so strict and set--a lot of dogs do not get adopted and people end up going to backyard breeders and other places to get a wanted pet. So it is a vicious circle so to speak as in a way you help keep the backyard breeders in business producing more unhealthy dogs and which there is never going to be enough homes for! Yes, It is commendable that you want the best home for the dog-----But nobody is perfect and I feel you are passing up many good homes for the dog. I am not perfect but I consider myself a very good home for a needy dog. And you are almost telling me I can't be trusted to do what I will say about giving Honey all the necessary shots---You are going on my past experiences---I feel like I have been tried, condemned and will never have this 'mark' taken off my record!
I think you know all the other things I do are a good way. I actually go out of my way far more than many others would---I love dogs and want the best for them. And like I said before---First time pet owners going through a Rescue to adopt have no background to go into----You have no idea what they are going to do (or will do) when it comes to knowing how to take care of a dog----Whether they will get all the shots----Do they know or will give a decent food? I have lots of experience and am studying all the time!
Marti---All this is not directed at you. I actually was looking forward to meeting you. Thanks for all you tried to do. And I hope Honey gets lucky and ends up with a 'perfect' home.

Subject: Honey
Dear Barb,
The adoption committee was going to send you a note, but I told them I wanted to contact you by e-mail myself....
I'm afraid the news is not good.... They decided that they would prefer that Honey go to another home. :-(
They don't ordinarily give specific reasons why they pass on a particular adoption candidate, but I think that their decision had a lot to do with the fact that they are pretty conventional when it comes to things like immunizations and heartworm prevention. I am guessing that they thought your approach--while having some merit and taken with the best of intentions--wasn't necessarily based on ALL the facts (e.g., not giving yearly shots--or even every three years--isn't necessarily a bad thing, but even Dr.Schultz at the Vet School recommends doing titers on a regular basis).
I'm pretty sure that was the "tipping point"....
And, even though you said you would give Honey shots on a regular basis if we/they wanted you to, I think they're concerned that-- since you seem to be on the cutting edge and tend to follow initial recommendations that aren't necessarily "tried and true" methods--in the future you might make other decisions that might not be consistent with their somewhat conventional (and conservative!) approach to veterinary medicine.
I also think they were concerned that Honey--being so young--might not be a good fit for Max, who is older. But, that's just a guess on my part.
(So as to avoid arguments and hard feelings, they don't ordinarily divulge their "reasons", so....this is really ALL really speculation on my part.)
I'm so sorry, Barb....I kind of saw this coming, but I was hoping that--since I forwarded all your e-mails to them--they might come to see your point of view.
(And, I think they DO see it; they just probably don't quite agree with you.)
I personally know that you are trying to do what you deem to be best for your dog(s) and perhaps--in another five or ten years--veterinary medicine will "come around" and will be more consistent with YOUR approach. But, for now, they worry about your being so "innovative".
They certainly understand that you are doing what you feel is best for Max (and would do your very best for Honey) but...different people have different definitions of what is "best". They know you are a loving, responsible pet owner. But, they just worry that your approach is TOO "cutting edge"--which, I guess, is why they ALSO call it being on the "bleeding" edge! :-(
I (and the adoption committee) truly appreciate your patience with this whole long drawn-out process, and I hope that you know how much I appreciate your notes, and also your good intentions and kindness.
If there is any consolation here for you, it's that at least you know that Honey will live a long happy life with someone--because of YOU.....
Thanks again, and we wish you the best of luck in your search for the best rescue dog "match" to adopt!
Marti

Again, sorry Barb. The one good thing though as she noted, if it was not for your interest at that particular time in wanting her she would not have been saved. Take that with you and move on to the next challenge....I am sure soon, Max will have another playmate.
