I think I've traumatized Seigi
Ok guys I'm sure you're all as sick about hearing about my illness as I am dealing with it but this is really about Seig.
The second to last attack I had I was in the bathroom hugging the toliet as usually and Seigi wouldn't stay out so I had no choice but to close the door...Also when the attack starts I'll go sit in the tub for awhile...Well that night when I closed the door on him he sat outside of it for the hour I was in there and did nothing but cry...he did it the entire night each time I went in there which was about every hour...
Now each and evertime I go in there he does the same thing and now scratches on the door...Do you guys think it's because he knows I'm sick or is now associating closing the door with me being sick or just because he doesn't like me closing the door?...
Our office is directly across from my bathroom and if hubby's in there on his computer Seigi will only cry for a second or to so I don't know if it's because he knows hubby is there and will take care of me or that he just doesn't feel alone...
Give me some opinions and if you have ideas about how to hadnle this I'm open to it...
Pretty pathetic that I'm a trainer and asking this question but it's the first time I've dealt with this behavior..The closest I've come to it is when we had Kujo and when I would have a seizure and hubby would call the medics if he didn't lock Kujo up he would go after the medics because he started associated them with taking me away..

It is a fact that dogs have the capability of sensing when things are wrong in people. This has been documented therefore there is no reason to believe otherwise that he is associating closed door to bathroom with you being ill.

that's what I thought Yogi even though he does it when I'm not sick...What do you think about him not doing it other then a second or 2 when hubby's in the office and do you have any thoughts on how to make him understand that it doesn't mean I'm sick everytime I go in there?...I just hate to see him stressing like that...
Not to mention after Kujo almost dying of hemmorahgic gastroenteritis due to the stress of Nina joing the family and Akita's being prone to it I'm kind of worried about that with him!

I imagine there is some way of teaching them of getting them to understand that not every trip in the bathroom requires their attention but in truth, living by myself and with Amie constantly wanting to be near me as well as Whisper, I gave up and just leave the bathroom door open. They walk in, take a quick look see and once they realize all appears well, they exit.

I usually leave it open if I'm not sick with the exception of taking a shower/bath because he tries to climb in the tub and he'll stay out if I tell him to so I'll keep doing that...Do you think as far as hubby being in the office he's just ok knowing he'll take care of me? Especially since if I'm sick in the middle of the night I won't wake him up so I'm up by myself and Seigi follows me in there!

Porter tries climbing on my lap when I'm going pee. But if I close him out he whines and claws the door. No win either way.

My opinion is when Seigi gets anxious (and for good reason) & no one else is around, he is uncertain & scared on what to do. But when your hubby is around, he senses that hubby isn't worried so Seigi feeds off his reassurance and settles down.
I'm sorry to hear you were still feeling sick! I hope the worst is over & the new meds give you a real break this time.

LOL I used to study Psychology in college. I loved everything about it. I was even pretty good for the few years I studied. I could easily narrow down other peoples issues. But it was a whole other ball game when it came to seeing my own. I think we lose focus of what we know because it becomes personal & it can be hard to step back & be unbiased. I think it happens to most of us. 8-)

I hope you get better soon. Being sick isn't very fun.

I'm not an expert but, maybe if you left the door open when you're sick and he can just be with you, it just might reduce his anxiety.

A number of years ago I suffered a very serious stomach bleed. I temporarily passed out from the sudden drop in blood pressure. When I came around, I crawled to the bathroom (I was too dizzy to stand and later found out that I'd broken my foot in four places) and was throwing up blood. I thought it would never stop. Bailey was absolutely frantic!!! Since that time, I've never enjoyed a private moment in the bathroom. Bailey doesn't necessarily have to be in the bathroom with me; she just needs to know that she can. So, from that time on I just leave the door open unless there is company.
