Unfortunately, vets are not authorities and when is the proper time for a pup to leave the dam. The are medical doctors, not breeders. The fact is, it was too young to take. People assume and this goes for most vets also, that when a pup no longer nurses off its mother that it is weaned. This is not correct, it is weaned when the mother no longer wants the pup around. This occurs usually between 10 and 12 weeks after the pup has been taught bite inhibition and proper dog socializing through play with its siblings. People do not teach these aspects, the mother and siblings do.
As for the crate, put something with your scent on it and and cover it at night so the dog cannot see out. The breeder should have given you a piece of the bedding that the pup and mother had slept on, this would have at least comforted the pup and gave it the impression the dam was near by.
Start feeding the pup in the crate to reinforce that it is safe. At night, give it a treat when it goes in. Stay patient during the first few days and nights, he will come around.

No I am not a Miniature Doberman, I was around 200 years before Karl Frederich Louis Doberman created the Dobie, and as for my friends the Manx cats, yes they are better at playing fetch than I am, I am a Miniature Pinscher.
