So I got my new boy on Monday night. He is everything I expected! He's a bossy, intolerant, grumpy, sweet, loving, fun little boy! We have alot of work to do, to make him into a mannerly little dog, but I am armed with an arsonal of knowledge and friends with knowledge of how to deal with his issues. Boo's biggest issue is resource guarding....EVERYTHING! Me, his bed, his blanket, food, toys, bones... you name it. I am a positive, reward-based trainer, so will not be doing any corrective actions, or punishment... well except putting him off my lap, if he tried to guard me... lol but I ignore most undesireable behaviour, and reward what I want... so far, he's improving already
He plays really well with Oliver, which shocked the heck outta me, as he's not supposed to be really interactive with other dogs, but for some reason, he likes Ollie. Mouse ignores him, like he ignores Mouse... which is funny, as they're like little bookends... when they both look away from eachother! lol
Boo is incredibly soft, unlike any Dachshund I've ever met. he feels more like a greyhound than a dachshund, and he has ALOT of fluffy fur... so unlike Mouse. Boo is also registered with the Continental Kennel Club... which isn't saying much as that KC registers crossbreeds, Labradoodles, Bichon/Shih Tsu's etc... uggh. His breeder registered him as a Chocolate and White Piebald... His breeder obviously knows NOTHING about dachshunds, if she think's he's a chocolate and white piebald! He is a Black and Tan Double Dapple, no question! He may be a Black and Tan Double Dapple Piebald, but you cant register them as both, and with his deafness and vision issues, he has to be a Double Dapple. (the issues are caused by breeding 2 merles/dapples together, in ANY breed that can be merle)
But they are For-Profit breeders, as there wasn't enough money in doxie's and are now haved moved on to another breed... uggh
For a dog who's been in 5 homes in 6 years, he's finally found his forever home. He will be a great teacher for me, and an awesome little dog! I am excited to rehab this dog, and make him into the great pet he's supposed to be!!!
