It's enough to make you think of never owning a pet! Ideally everyone takes their pets health into mind. I don't like our dogs sharing the places where we sleep or lie for many reasons, some a lot less serious then this article mentions! But I think simply living with animals we will always run some risk of catching things from them & vice versa. Look at the bird flu (whatever happened to that). Swine flu...bugs can also mutate. There's always some risk in everything.

A rolled up newspaper can be an effective training tool when used properly. For instance, use the rolled-up newspaper if your dog chews up something inappropriate or has a housebreaking accident. Bring the dog over to the destroyed object (or mess), then take the rolled-up newspaper and hit yourself over the head as you repeat the phrase,"I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG, I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG!"

Well after 50 plus years, I have not contracted anything from my cats or dogs nor have them contracted anything from me...so I will let it be as it always has been and not panic every time someone comes up with a new study that in 10 years will be reviewed and determined is not correct. Just like all the studies before....Besides, they need me to keep warm at night, at least they think they do....

Reminds me of a story that an elderly friend tells. He always made a habit of allowing his dog to lick the plate after he had finished eating. On one occasion a visitor saw him and remarked "Really - how unhygienic! All sorts of diseases could be spread like that!"
"Don't worry," the old man replied "I've done it for years and the dog hasn't caught anything yet!"

"During May–June 2008, another survey of 870 foreign backpackers (median age 25.5 years) in Bangkok, Thailand, found that 3.56% had been licked by a dog."
Haha I like this part...
And after all that it goes on to say;
"Zoonotic infections acquired by sleeping with a pet are uncommon. Because of exposure to zoonotic pathogens, especially when animals are displayed in public settings, the National Association of State Public Health Veterinarians issued specific recommendations. However, the concerns associated with sharing a bed with pets, being licked by pets, or kissing pets were not addressed.
... the risk for transmission of zoonotic agents (is) uncommon with healthy pets..."
So as long as we take responsibility for our pets and keep them healthy, something I'm sure we all are doing anyway, then we're good to go!
Lol, well Axis sleeps in his kennel for now and Raina usually is on her own bed but I slept with them both on my (single!) bed for the first couple weeks he was here since he was so young.
(Raina still comes up sometimes but I'm not worried about getting the plague any time soon... )

I thought I didn't like rats but a while back I was in the pet store when they were cleaning their cage and feeding them. It was hilarious - they were showing off and climbing over each other to get attention. I loved them.

I don't like rats either--no kind! No rodents--maybe a bunny isn't so bad but you know it is somewhat like the squirrel --- just because it is cute doesn't make it less of a rodent!

I have to agree with Yogi:
I've been sleeping with furry creatures since I was a baby and I have been alright. I'll take the risk. Lara would be cold if she wasn't under the duvet!!!
