Default Introducing a new dog

We have a had a one year old GSD/Husky since he was 12 weeks old. He has gone through both puppy and intermediate obedience school and will be starting advanced. We socialize him a lot with other dogs.

He loves dogs so much, that we decided to get another dog from the SPCA. We decided on a Border Collie/ Shepherd. They get along great for the most part, except that he does seem to overwhelm her in the backyard while they are playing and she will snap at him.

The other issue is that we are having a hard time with him object guarding the toys. We will give both of them a toy [we have had both old and new toys to try] and he will drop his toy, then will go and take her away. As soon as he has it, he puts it out of her reach. We will give her the abandoned toy from him, but he'll just take that one away too. After about 10 times she will snap at him or bite him. He then, in turns, runs away.

He will also try to take chews from her. He will lay there and watch her with hers, belly crawl, and then steal it away the moment she drops it.

I don't want to stop her on the chews/toys because she's teething and they are saving my furniture.

Our dog, before the pup, always had a chew/toy/ play object with him. He got everything and never had to share. I need some serious help because I feel so bad for them both right now.

Thanks!!!!

Smile Welcome to the forum!

Just found this on the net-sounds like some good ideas: How to Train your Dog to Share their Toys | eHow.com

Also would like to alert you to this:Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency--esp. alert German Shepherds I don't know if it will work for you as you may have to be a subscriber. If it doesn't work--Put exocrine pancreatic insufficiency in your browser and that should bring up some sites. You might also try German Shepherd Dog nutrition problems or something on that order.---

The GSDmix needs correcting. I would correct any behavior that is leading him upto wanting to steal something.

Knowing your own dog you should be able to see the clues easily. You mentioned the belly crawling so that is one. Stop him as soon as he starts. Stop any hard focusing as soon as you see him staring. No fixating! Then replace those behaviors with what you do want. "down" command, "go to bed", "sit", whatever you WANT him to do. If he's not trained I would leash him to myself and place her in the same room a few feet away with her treat or toy. Give him his favorite toy & have him lay next to you, again correct the first sign you see in the way I mentioned previously. Be sure to praise the good behavior too.

If you can't watch him, separate him from her so she doesn't get deprived nor learns her own bad behavior because of it.

A rolled up newspaper can be an effective training tool when used properly. For instance, use the rolled-up newspaper if your dog chews up something inappropriate or has a housebreaking accident. Bring the dog over to the destroyed object (or mess), then take the rolled-up newspaper and hit yourself over the head as you repeat the phrase,"I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG, I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG!"
