Huge ears
Petfinder Adoptable Dog | Cattle Dog | Mansfield, OH | AJ
Ryan said we can go get him on Monday morning. Isn't his ears just adorable! We're going to change his name. I want to call him Sputnik, but Ryan absolutly hates that name. He'll never take the place of Luna, in fact he's a completly different breed. The shelter has no clue as to the breed either, and they seriously doubt it's an Australian cattle dog like he's listed as. But they had to stick him in some category and that's what he ended up with. I have been through pics of dogs with stand up ears and none come close to the size he has, hence Sputnik. But I think he might be a bull terrier mix. The shelter said he's really small, not even knee height and they stuck him in the puppy section because he's small. I think he would make the perfect lap dog.
I think his ears make up 3/4 of his height.
A bull terrier's ears are somewhat smaller than his. Can you think of any dogs that has huge ears? boston terriers ears are smaller and corgi's ears are smaller, in fact I can't think of any breed that is small that has such huge ears. not even a pharoh hound has ears that big. What can you guys come up with?

Lol, definitely not a Luna! I am thinking that it is part Bull Terrier too---Ears sure look like it but the head of a Bull Terrier is almost flat so what other breed is mixed in there?! Maybe the head is flatter than what I can tell in the pics but don't think so.
Bull Terrier Information and Pictures, Miniature Bull Terrier. Bullterrier
Be sure to look at the 4 pages of pics--esp. the page 1 at bottom of this 1st page. It may be the flat head of the Bull Terrier--I notice in some of the front faces are hard to tell in the link above!
Congratulations on rescuing another dog. Be sure and fill us in on all the details!

I think he might be part bull terrier, but his face doesn't look like a bull terrier. He is definatly a mix. Bull terriers look like they have down's syndrome. Sputnik doesn't have that look, but he is the proper size and colors, bull terriers come in brindle too, but his ears are much bigger.
I hope he likes to play fetch. I would love a dog that plays fetch.

Wow, what a find! I see Corgi written all over his face and in those knobby knees of his. Corgi's also have large ears. He looks like a mix of Bull Terrier and Corgi to me.

He could very well be bull terrier and corgi. I think the thing that's stopping me from thinking corgi is the fact that this guy has a tail. I remember reading a research paper on breeding boxers with no tails so they don't have to be docked and they bred a boxer with a corgi and got some really short boxers with no tails. For the most part the gene for no tail was dominant and therte was less than 1% of the dogs that was born with tails. So I was thinking if it was corgi, the dog wouldn't have a tail. But there is a 1% chance that it is!
I just looked up pictures of corgis and they do have big ears, but they look proportionate to the size of their head. I don't think I'm going to find a breed with the size of ears Sputnik has because I think he's just a freak.

There are two types of Corgi's, the Cardigan and Pembroke. The Cardigan Welsh Corgi sports a tail, the Pembroke doesn't. That is the major difference between the two. There are some other minor differences though.

Wow, I did some further looking and found there are 2 breeds of corgi. One without a tail and one with a tail. So I think you are right. Bull terrier and corgi. You're right. He does have knobby knees. He doesn't have the short legs of a corgi (thank goodness).
Cardigan Welsh Corgi Information and Pictures, Welsh Corgis, Corgi, Corgis
Look at this guy's ears! Cardigan Welsh Corgi FTW! So it looks like a Bull Terrier and CArdigan welsh corgi.
Everyone, throw some names out here. We don't like AJ and Ryan really hates Sputnik.

Wow - those ears are amazing - never seen anything like him! I can see English Bull Terrier and maybe Cardigan Corgi.
Just seen Lunar's last post so hopefully I'm on the right track.
Name wise - do you want something Welsh to reflect his Cardigan heritage? The Welsh name for Cardigan is Aberteifi - the mouth of the river Teifi. Teifi (pronounced Tie - vee) is a good dog's name.

The pics of the Cardigan Welsh Corgi in my breeds book has very big ears--one even looks bigger ears than your dog!
Only names I can think of off hand are: Charlie----Sparky----and Sassy----Hey, lol---Be careful with the name--You know how Buster is!! I don't like Sputnik either--In fact I think I hate it! And it doesn't roll off the tongue very well--Try yelling it several times like you would if you were calling the dog--Yuk!!

Yes, his ears are amazing. I am suprised they are that big and still stand up like they do. As for a name, I want something relating to the size of his ears. I like Sputnik the best and maybe Radar. Let me run Radar by Ryan and see what he says. If you guys can think of any other feel free to post.

A rolled up newspaper can be an effective training tool when used properly. For instance, use the rolled-up newspaper if your dog chews up something inappropriate or has a housebreaking accident. Bring the dog over to the destroyed object (or mess), then take the rolled-up newspaper and hit yourself over the head as you repeat the phrase,"I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG, I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG!"

Hey Lange! That is a good one--at least for having to be a name about ears. I have a 'bratty' nephew that was/is always nicknamed Radar--His last name is Ray. So everytime I hear radar I think of him!

He's such a cutie! I'm going to say I agree with the Corgie x Bull Terrier. He has a bully body type for sure! But here's a thought. I've seen Pitty crosses with huge giant stand up ears too. And Staffie crosses like that as well. but even though his head is different than a BT he still has that "look" He's gorgeous, and I'm very excited for you!

I want him to have a Welsh name! "Big ears" in Welsh is Clystiau Mawr - a bit of a mouthful, especially if you're not Welsh I admit! - so you could call him "CM". Whatever you call him (and Radar is a pretty cool name) he is a gorgeous looking dog.

I am really pissed. We paid for them to hold him and the afternoon people didn't look at the paperwork and they adopted him out. We were not very happy. The shelter said to go through and look and see if there was any other dog we wanted. We almost walked out and went home, but we figured we drove all that way, we may as well look. We found a different dog that we really like. We both saw him at the same time and said "That's the one!" He came in as a stray, so we have to go back Wednesday and pick him up if nobody claims him. He is adorable. I don't have a picture because they didn't even have time to post him on petfinder yet. He's a little guy. He's cream colored with brown spots. And he looks very active. We didn't get the original dog we picked out, but we did find a great doggie. Maybe some things happen for a reason.
Another note: When we were almost at the shelter, a really scared staffie ran out in front of our car and we almost hit him. We did try to catch him, but he was super scared and ran right down the middle of the road. The police did show up and tried to catch him. They also failed. The people that worked at the shelter almost hit him too when they went to pull in. They think someone took him out there and dumped him. When we left, we still had no idea if anyone had caught that poor doggie.

How disappointing but you never know, it may be the right thing for everyone that this other doggy is yours. I don't know about you but I was head over heels in love with my dog from the moment I chose him from the litter even though he had had no chance to show me his personality or character. The dog I loved was a fantasy dog really. Manny has grown to be his own person and I think he is the best dog ever but it would be the case for any other dog. I'm sure this new one will be just as wonderful or even more so :-) Hope the little Staffie gets rescued soon.

The doggie we picked out looks just like this doggie, except the one we picked out has brown eyes instead of blue.

Staying with the Welsh theme - that looks like a Welsh sheepdog to me.
