A spot for Kiyah up dates.... :)
Well we got a phone call this wkend and they found her pups. They have been eating mushed dog food.... So all 7 pups are in our care! What i failed to mention was that where we got mommy. Hubby works there on the wkend and is good friends with the guy that he works for. So, we got the phone call this wkend a family took them in as soon as they were found and started giving them mushed puppy food and they ate it up. They also went to the vet this morning she is guessing them to be about 3 wks old and healthy happy pups. All ranging from the largest being 2.8 lbs and the smallest 2lbs. So, since mom is pretty much dried up and they dont have much for teeth yet I have them eating canned puppy milk with canned puppy food. Momma is such good mom too. She cleans them after they are done and cleans up after them if they leave a mess. Just thought you all would like to know....
Hubby did some looking threw breeds and he thinks she is a aussie mixed with curr dog. As there is alot of hunters that live in that area. But honesly who really knows what she is mixed with to be honest to me it doesnt matter. We are keeping her and gonna find good homes for the pup when its time.

Canned food is really not good even at that age whether puppy food or not.
I help wean the my litters off using puppy chow and goats milk which is actually better than canned puppy milk in a blender into a mush than heat it slightly.
This gives them small kibble which helps stimulate their gums and between the two, gives them all their required nutrients.
Glad you were able to reunite the dam and her pups.

Great news! Gee, it is lucky that they are so healthy being 'abandoned' and only about 3 weeks old. Lol, you really got your hands full of dogs right now! Hope Yogi gets on here and tells you what he feeds his young pups---has to do with a 'gruel' he makes using goats milk--His pups really thrive on it.
Thank you for taking such good care of all of them. Lol, be careful or you will end up with more dogs then you need--getting attached and all!
Yipee! I see Yogi was replying at same time and already gave you 'the formula!'

Thanks for the info. I will get some goats milk while im out today.
Kiyah ismuch more comfortable now that she has her pups, which is a given. My kids are already saying they want to keep one, but theres no way we can. Just not enough room here for 4 dogs. So, no matter what they all have to go to homes. We have already got a few of them homes when its time. I am soo glad that they were found! I will be honest. I have never had a dog that has had pups so this is def a new experience, but i couldnt just let them stay there where they wouldnt of been taken care of or even sent to the poud. Needless to say our local pound is not the best. Even our vet wont tell people to take pup to our local shelter. She sees way to many sick pups come from there. But anyway. I will make sure that they are very well taken care of. They are wayyyy to cute! he he. I will take some pics later and post them.

I'm VERY glad you found the litter! I bet Momma is sooo happy! I cant wait to see pics!
The litter of St. Poodles I raised were weaned on a mix of puppy food soaked in hot water and blended with plain yoghurt. This is apparently a recipe that most St. Poodle breeders around here wean their pups onto. I've continued using this for the litters of rescues off of First Nations reserves. It has worked very well with every litter I raised.

The reason some use yogurt is that many are unaware that goats milk is the closest thing to dams milk. Even yogurt does not come that close. It is just more convenient for most to obtain unaware it is carried in most major grocery stores.

yogi, I looked at our local geocery store for the goats milk today. But Im not exactly sure what I am looking for. As I said this is the first litter of pups i have dealt with. I want to do them right. Is there any name specific that i should be looking for? I am planning on going bk out later. I asked a few people that worked there and they looked at me like i was nuts... lmao
Ok now on to a question bout momma. The vet told me to feed her puppy food to help put weight on her. Is there anything else i should be feeding or could try cause she was eating really well and now it has slacked off quite a bit. I dont want her to loose anymore weight she is skinny enough. Im gonna try adding yogurt to see if it will help her to eat the puppy food any better.. I know it is good for her. I use to feed it to my danes a few times a wk. When I weighed her last monday she only weighed 41 lbs.

It would be in the dairy section where they keep the quart containers. I generally only find it in the major grocery store chains not the smaller ones.
The good thing is the shelf life is far greater than regular milk. Dependent on the size of the pups I mix 2 cups puppy chow in a blender and approx same of the goats milk. Once blended it will be like a mush with small kibble. Heat it up til it is warm than stir slightly.

Enjoyed those pics--Thanks for posting them! Lol, you are going to have a hard time giving them up--I just know it! They sure look healthy and big for only 3 weeks old.
You wanted to know how to put some weight on mama. I hesitate a little because I feed raw and some home cooking. Switching to regular food after commercial dog food can be a little tricky sometimes--stomach not use to the change but will suggest some peanut butter--but be careful as is a lot of fat (course that is where the calories are)--maybe give a scant tablespoon at first, maybe try mixing it in with the dry dog food. Maybe add some cottage cheese--Be aware of too much salt though. How about some mashed potatoes---Please no Instant Mashed Potatoes though! Mashed sweet potatoes too. I wouldn't add any salt to any of this either (while cooking either!) Yogi says if you want to fatten her up--Feed her table scraps! But you have to know what you are doing--a lot of human food is not good for dogs--Can be dangerous. I am going to give you a link here that I started a while back--It is on all the 'hazardous' foods not to let your dog have--actually it turned into more than just food dangers--Hope you read this long thread as it is important to know.-->
Foods that are hazardous to a dog Some very important no-no's that are mentioned in the above link--Do not give raisins, chocolate-especially dark chocolate, onions---You will see many things there. Don't let a dog swallow pennies--Make note of that 'story' when you see it in the thread above.
Hey! Keep us updated on all the progress and stories. Love to see mama with her pups in a pic if you can manage to get them altogether. Lol, Bet there is never a dull moment at your place right now.

Thanks for the link. I will def check it out. I knew about the raisins, chocolate and onions, but thanks for the info. I dont give any of my dogs much human food especailly the mini dachsaund. She has/gets colitis! So, we already have to be careful with her. I mainly just want to add something to her food to help her eat it, because once she gets some weight on she will be eating what everyone else is. Which is pro plan adult chicken and rice. We sell it here at work so it is easier for me to get...lol Plus, it is what my vet reccomends. So, the puppy food momma and the pups are eating is also the proplan.
And yes, I would love to get a pic of momma with the pups, but so far the only time they are together close enough for a pic is when they are in the kennel. Once they are out obviously they are all, all over the place... lol and momma just wants to get her love. Right now, I am tring to get schedules sorted out. Cause we dont let daisy and flash out with the pups. Kiyah doesnt mind daisy, but Flash on the other hand. lol! I think is just to rambucious for her. She goes into major protective mode...ha ha ha! So, when the pups are out daisy and flash get kenneled for now.

more puppy pics!!
Well i finally got some pics of Kiyah with the pups!!! woohooo.....
I do have a question for some of you though. When we first brought Kiyah home every now and then she would puke up alittle bit of her food. But here the last 3 days I have come to notice that it is not vomit. She is apparently regurgitating her food. I have spoke to the vet about it and she said it could be that she has an enlarged trachea and that there is nothing we can do about it, but its now to the point that even when she cleans up the pups poo sometimes she does it. I have been paying close attention to her cause of this. Nothing has changed about her. She doesnt act like anything is bothering her. No diarreha or anything like that. I was just wondering have any of you experienced this? And know of anything that could help her?
Also, Thanks for all the comments/suggestions for these babies and Kiyah! Now enjoy the puppy pics!

More great pics! Love seeing the 'whole family' together.
At first I thought I wouldn't have anything about the regurgitation but then I checked my vet book and googled--used the words: dog regurgitation and it brought up a lot of sites--but I only read this one: Canine Megaesophagus (Regurgitation of food or water) I hope you will look at the many other sites too by putting the words in your browser. I guess this is a main reason for 'mama' to be so thin and not because of just abandoned. The pups are so healthy too--must not of been abandoned too long. But that regurgitation is really nothing to ignore. It prob. says about the same things on those sites but just in case it doesn't, will quote a couple paragraphs from my home vet book:
----The sudden onset of regurgitation in a previously healthy dog is almost certainly due to a foreign body caught in the esophagus. Drooling indicates that the dog cannot swallow saliva.
----Chronic regurgitation (the kind that comes and goes but seems to be getting worse) suggests a partial obstruction caused by megaesophagus, stricture or tumor.
----A serious complication of regurgitation is aspiration pneumonia, in which the lungs become infected as a result of food being aspriated into the lungs. When regurgitated food ends up in the lungs, aspiration pneumonia is the result. Another important complication is nasal cavity infection. This occurs when food is regurgitated into the nose.
I don't know your vet and it sounds like you only talked to her on the phone about it---But it bothers me that she doesn't seem to be more concerned about this and I am wondering if there is also something that can be done----She says there isn't but if she has not examined for other possible causes--How can she say that!!

Well, She went over a lot with me. I don't think its an obstruction that would of been the first thing she would of mentioned if she thought for one min thats what is was. i trust my vet I see her deal with so many cases of a dog puking and things like that. She asked me how she was actually going thew the motions be for hand. Like was she coughing and things like that. Its not a constant thing. Like today she hasnt done it all day. She has eating and been out to poo. Im gonna talk to the vet more about it tomorrow. I kinda asked her about it in between clients. The first thing I was concerned with was something like parvo cause i didn't realize what she was actually doing. I'm gonna see how she does the rest of the nite and into the morning. Since I have to be at work tomorrow any way. If she is still doing it, then I will talk to her a little more bout it. Hubby suggested an obstruction as well. I will keep you all posted on whats said and how things are going.

WAH! That pic looks awesome. It must be a very rewarding experience. My TP only had 2 pups so it's quite manageable at that time. But I can tell it'll be a different case for you.
Looking forward for more of your updates!

They all look so adorable in your photos. It melts the heart..
I hope you find some answers for Kiyah so she can get better and be more comfortable.

A rolled up newspaper can be an effective training tool when used properly. For instance, use the rolled-up newspaper if your dog chews up something inappropriate or has a housebreaking accident. Bring the dog over to the destroyed object (or mess), then take the rolled-up newspaper and hit yourself over the head as you repeat the phrase,"I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG, I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG!"
