I have never done this but I know from what others have said in here that it can be something that needs to be carefully addressed. An idea here--Put Shih Tzu special problems birthing or even problems birthing puppies in your browser and see if there is some good info there. You might also check out previous threads/posts in here on the subject by putting the appropriate words in the SEARCH box in this forum--found near top of page(s) in this forum in the blue strip that goes across the page(s) (word Search is nearer the right side of page) Hope you find some good info---I may search a little more here later myself and bring it to you in this same post or a new one! Lol, be looking later here, okay?
Okay--So I am back already! I found this site that I think you will find important to read: Canine Reproduction Video and Book on Breeding and Whelping dogs by Debbie Jensen for dog breeders and Whelping trouble. And here is another good site to see--It is by a breeder of Shih Tzu who knows what to do!!--> Shih Tzu - Birth Process/Difficult Deliveries
If you want to read more--I put Shih Tzu birthing process in my browser and it brought up a lot of sites.
When is your dog due? Is the father a Shih Tzu? Keep us posted ---Want to know everything is okay and see pics of the puppies too! Good luck! Don't think you mentioned your dog's name?
Using the search box in here using the word birthing--Found these: What to do if labor stops
This is a reply to someone about a birthing box:Quote a child's wading pool makes a good whelping box. It's easy to clean, Mom can get in and out without any problems, but puppies stay in until they're actually walking. You need to cover the entire bottom with several layers of newspaper, then provide blankets to keep Mom and babies warm.
For extra warmth, you can put a heating mat, like one would use for reptiles, under one side. Puppies can crawl to that side and keep warm during the times Mom is out, taking a potty break, or just taking a break from the responsibilities of puppy rearing.
And I know you didn't ask, but I'd recommend you don't place the puppies in new homes until they're at least 8 weeks old, preferably 12 weeks. They need time with their mom to learn how to be a dog, and to learn bite inhibition. End of Quote.
Here is another link in here about a book and if you click on the link in it--Will lead you to Amazon.com where you can purchase it cheap. http://www.i-love-dogs.com/forums/do...cal-guide.html
Hey--you could get books from the library and if they don't have what you need--They can get on the net and find a library that has them and the libraries have a 'moving' library that will bring them to your library and then you can get them to read. It should be a free service--It is here in my little 'burg.'
Well , I have to go feed my 2 dogs and get out to the garden now. If you put birthing in that search box in this forum--will bring up more threads to click on---I just don't have time to check out any more right now.

No, you should never have the male anywhere near the female when she is giving birth. Females are extremely vulnerable as well as protective during this
period and can easily be put under stress. In addition, it is not uncommon for a bitch to attack a male that gets any where near her offspring.
