What is wrong with me???
There is a dude that lives 1 ½ hours from me that is going to have his senior LGD put to sleep because his joints won't allow him to tend his flocks anymore and I offered to take the pooch so it won't get put to sleep for being old. Ryan is going to shoot me and we will have another great pyrenees in the house. I can understand that it's not economical for the farmer to keep a dog that can't work, but I didn't want to see the doggie get put to sleep just because it's old. It's not so old or in bad of shape to be put to sleep. It just has arthritis and can't get around like it used to. I should have wondered what I was going to do with another dog before I offered to take him...

Luna! Luna! You just have a heart of gold--That's all! Although your hubby, Ryan must to, lol. I am sure this dog will love you much! Being as it has had it's name for a long time--Are you going to keep the name? Do you know his name yet? Be sure to give us all the news on this new family member when you get him.

Same exact thoughts, like C/M. LOL You have a huge ol heart Luna! You need to stop talking to people and stop looking at petfinder and stuff! You're going to overflow yourself right out of your house in a few years.
Seriously I can't help but have a huge smile on my face right now. You're just so sweet...I hope Ryan takes it well. Maybe with this new one you can think of it as fostering and trying to get him into another home where he can relax & retire?
I have to say, I love old dogs the best. Even as a farmer why couldn't he just let the old dog live comfortably retired especially having given him the best of his years...so sad really. Dogs can work but they are also beautiful feeling & loving creatures. They aren't disposable tools.
Hugging you ~~(Luna)!!~

A rolled up newspaper can be an effective training tool when used properly. For instance, use the rolled-up newspaper if your dog chews up something inappropriate or has a housebreaking accident. Bring the dog over to the destroyed object (or mess), then take the rolled-up newspaper and hit yourself over the head as you repeat the phrase,"I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG, I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG!"

I don't even know his name yet. I don't even know if he has a name. Some farmers don't name their work dogs. And since he's a work dog, he's most certainly not house trained. I hope he likes cats. O.o

Some farmers have too many dogs to do this with. If a farmer has 12 LGDs and 4 herders, that is a lot of dogs to take care of when they are healthy. At least this farmer is more humane than most. He was going to have it euthanized rather than dump it at a shelter or take it out back and shoot it.

You're right, It is good that he's being humane about it but I still think farmers too need to be personally accountable for living beings they have benefited on. Although I do understand what you're saying.

I can't stand the thoughts of what happens to too many dogs!
Getting away from that picture in my mind---Hey! I wonder what Porter (and the rest of your brood of course--but esp. Porter) What do you think--maybe he will forget about his recent past ---- I can see him doting on this dog and Buster may too--The Three Musketeers! LOL, I wasn't really even thing Stooges here, Luna, but I could just see you coming back with that 'line!'
When do you get this dog, lol, are you going to get it yourself and surprise Ryan when he gets off work?! Are you going to give the new dog a bath with the same shampoo you use on your other dogs--before you introduce the other dogs? Yogi always said that was a good way.

I agree with you and I believe that in his own mind, he was being responsible. The dude is willing to drive here so he doesn't have to put his dog to sleep. I think if he cares that much, the doggie must have a name. I'm not sure what it is yet.

The dude said he hates cats, so I have to get with him and see if he kills them or just avoids them.

You do have a big heart. Thats alot of big dogs in one household, hope you have a big house, LoL. I have a tuff time keeping up with my two dog and I have help from my Husband. They are little, little poops, little treats, little appetites, little fights, little kisses. My cat is bigger that Hunter, and she dosent take any crap off of any dog. I guess shes earned that right shes 20yrs old. Hunter always trys to give her kisses, she slaps him with her paw.

Wondering if you've told Ryan about the "new addition" or, is it going to be a surprise?

The dog's name is Bailey and he REALLY hates cats. He's killed two cats. I sent an e-mail back and asked if they were strays or pets. Some dogs will leave house pets alone but will kill strays.

WE won't be getting Bailey. He goes after cats and kills them. While I do get quite irritated with my kitties, I don't want them dead. I do wish I could have helped this doggie though.

Sorry to hear that Luna---I was afraid it wasn't going to work--but you tried! I suppose this farmer is going to go ahead and put Baily down--Can you talk him into advertising for someone to take him?

I did talk to the guy and he said he is trying really hard to find a home for him but after it snows, it won't be possible to care for him. There is no way they can bring him into their house because they have an indoor cat.
