I have seen a lot on what can happen and on who's fault it is. I would like to see some attempt at solutions and saving the poor innocent babies, kids,--humans and animals ---At the very least--The truth about what can and has happened should not be ignored---Teaching that you can be attacked, maimed, and killed and the best ways to protect it from happening! I don't care what breed it is--It happens. I don't think any baby should be left alone with any dog --for example--It is like Russian Roulette! It is almost like brainwashing--My dog will not hurt anyone--My dog is a good protector for my baby/ little kids, etc. This just may not be true!!! I know that I would not be willing to chance it! You can not bring back the dead!!
I am against banning breeds. Bigger breeds get the most rap because of their size and strength-- potentially can (and do) easier kill someone/something.--Is that not a fact that is being ignored? What is a solution!!!

For starters I think that communities especially the big cities need to adopt policies that anyone adopting a dog should be required to take te dog to training classes that include education on responsible ownership..If people can't afford training classes then the shelters should offer them for free..I know as a trainer I would be more then willing to volunteer my time as I'm sure many others would for the shelters that can't afford to pay one..They should also do a background check on people who adopt and if they have any convictions of a violent crime be it on an animal or a person they should be denied the adoption..
Secondly I think that shelters should do follow up visits to the home to make sure the dogs are being properly cared for.
I also think that it should be a law as it is here that breeders should have to be licensed and inspected yearly and anyone caught breeding or selling puppies without being registered by the state should be charged criminally to help shut down the puppy mills and backyard breeders..I also think that breeders should do follow up visits to the homes their pups are going to to be assured they're being properly cared for..I did this myself and so does Seigi's breeder..I also did not sell any of my litters out of state so that I could make these visits..I also did not turn over registration papers until I had proof of both the spay/neuter as well as completion of a puppy training class..
It would also help if the states/cities that have BSL would spend their money on enforcing stiffer laws and penalties for dog fighting (felony here), neglect or abuse as well as charging irresponsible owners criminally if their dog attacks a person or animal..here in MO they've even passed a law where it's a felony to be a spectator at a dog fight. This for sure isn't a cure all but it's a start..
People may get tired of hearing and seeing things related to why BSL is wrong and how it's the fault of people and not the breed but perhaps if more people were willing to be educted on these facts there would be a better chance of the gov't and citizens to push for the types of changes I've listed instead of going with the mass hysteria and inaccurate information and pushing for BSL..Obviously the gov't on a local level doesn't have the funds to do both..

Agree whole hearted.
There is Greyhound rescue/adoption shelter very close to where I live, and they do go to the home first, for a visit. And in the contract, it states that there will be other follow up visits later, after the dog has been placed with you.

I agree with a lot of what you wrote Ree. I would add that dog owners should have to go get paperwork to own dogs, like owning a gun, you have to qualify & have a background check. Then we'd have to renew every other year or so by bringing in paper work showing their dogs have been vet checked at least once in the last year. And make chipping a dog mandatory so owners & breeders can be held responsible for what happens to their dog, whether given up to a shelter or if the dog becomes a nuisance...impose fines over it.
If a dog goes missing or if it dies & has no paper work showing that it died of natural causes..revoke permission for owning animals. That way we also cover people who would be tempted to kill their dogs.
Maybe I'm going over board but I think it would make people face personal responsibility in deciding to own or breed dogs.

A rolled up newspaper can be an effective training tool when used properly. For instance, use the rolled-up newspaper if your dog chews up something inappropriate or has a housebreaking accident. Bring the dog over to the destroyed object (or mess), then take the rolled-up newspaper and hit yourself over the head as you repeat the phrase,"I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG, I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG!"

I totally agree Lange...After all a dog can become a dangerous weapon in the wrong hands..At the very least I think this should be done for anyone wanting to own one of the so-called "dangerous" breeds.

More good ideas! Do you think we might be able to gather all good answers and somehow (I am not good at doing this type of thing--how to and where etc)-start petitions--notify the right sources to get some action maybe going--You get what I mean I hope!!

I think so too. It'd be better than outright banning them in the cities that do.
I wish, C/M. the problem is the gov's top priority isn't finding a real & fair solution. The problem with the laws on dogs is that there aren't funds to see them through. Even now people break the law where there are breed bans because the gov can't enforce it's own system. They (gov) think it's easier to ban dogs then to go after the real culprits; people. It's the animals that lose and the people who go scott free.
