Default Update on Chance

Well we got Chance to the vet yesterday and he checked out great..We've got the little booger up to 42lbs!!..He got all of his shots and very thorough exam and the vet said he's actually in very good health..we also met with the lady who runs the rescue and she fell in love with Chance and his sweet little self..He's really come out of his shell the past few days and now were starting to see just how much energy he has and just how capable of getting into mischief he is lol..Once his heartworm test comes back they'll go ahead and set him up to be neutered..

He's in desperate need of training which we're working on but other then that he's a sweetheart..Oh and the vet found a BB pellet near his rib cage so at some time in his short little life some jerk shot at him with a BB gun..

Glad he is so healthy! Hope that was the only BB pellet he had---Some people/brats are such idiots!
Thanks for the update, lol, keep 'em coming---like hearing about Chance.

Are you keeping him or is he at the rescue?

He's still with us..We're going to foster him for the rescue until they get him adopted...She just put him on Petfinder yesterday.

I was hoping you would keep him. He looks so cute and snuggly. I will take him if you can find transport.

Luna, There are places that will transport dogs for free. Did you check out --> free dog transport or help for dog transport in your browser? Maybe the place where Chance is now could have some answers too or other rescue places may be able to give you some ideas/names.

But, lol, I have a feeling that Chance may of already found his forever home with Ree! Lol, every time she posts about him---Sounds like he is 'worming' his way deeper in her heart!!

Hubby has really fallen for him and is willing to pay the adoption fee to keep him but again it will depend on how him and Seigi take to each other..We were going to start introducing them this week while Chance was in his crate since they're both well aware of each others presence but we got a call today that he's positive for hookworm so that knocked that out and I really think it would be better to get them integrated after Chance has been neutered and that won't happen until after Thanksgiving...So there's still a chance we might keep him but again it depends on Seigi...We've already seen how Chance reacts to dogs and he's great..Even with the little yappers that come charging after him on walks..He just stands there wagging his tail..He really is a sweet little guy!!

I hope you do get to keep him!!! Why would you have to pay an adoption fee if you were the one who found him?

Because part of getting the rescue to take care of his vet bills and neutering we had to sign a foster parent contract saying we'd pay the adoption fee to help cover his vet fees if we decided to keep him..In all honesty I don't know just how up to it we'll be..He's so high strung and unless he gets an extreme amount of excersize we're lucky if we can get him to sit for 2 seconds..Hubby's been great about taking him for at least 2 or 3 long walks a day and even that doesn't burn him out..I'm a bit concerned about how much of his high energy Seigi is going to be willing to tolerate..I had this same issue with my Akita Kujo and my Husky Nina..Once Akita's get close to the age of 2yr.s which Seigi will be March 1st they mellow out quite a bit..Seigi likes to play but he has about a 10 or 15 minute spurt and he's back on the couch snoozing..if Chance gets to aggravating him I'm pretty sure he won't tolerate it..Kujo and Nina had some very nasty fights because of that but Nina was a good solid 80lbs and could hold her own to a point..Chance is so little compared to Seigi one bite from him might be all it takes..So at this point it's still pretty iffy..Not to mention Chance is turning out to be quite destructive and I have feeling it's going to take a good while to break him..He's already destroyed all the blinds in my laundry and has managed to climb up on the dryer to pull crap of the shelves.

Do you have a fenced in yard? If you do decide to keep Chance and Seigi gets along with him, then they could run around the backyard with each other.
Oh, I really hope Seigi likes him? I believe all this happens for a reason. But, if he must go to another home, do you get the chose whether the new person is suitable or not. I hope so.

No we don't have a fenced yard but we have a huge kennel area for Seigi that they could both fit in with no problem..We do get a say so though in the family he goes to if we don't keep him..I think if there's going to be an issue with them it's most likely going to be Seigi not being able to deal with Chances energy level..I mean here it is noon time and this horse of my still refuses to get off the couch to go outside and he hasn't been out since 10pm last night...Akita's have a tendency to be pretty mellow and at times lazy and it's mainly do to the fact that they're guard dogs..The only time Seigi takes his fat self off the couch is if I get up to go in another room because of course he has to guard me even when I'm in the bathroom lol..Chance on the other hand either wants to be outside looking for a rabbit to chase, trying to find trouble to get into or he just wants to be played with.

Mr. Sweaters is high energy too. All I have to do is sit on the back deck and chuck tennis balls for him to fetch. You can try it and see if that works.

Any dates on when Chance will be getting the snip? I need to dig out pic's of my old cur to share now. It's funny how life is!...didn't you not too long ago write you'd never own anything but an Akita...oh how naive we humans can be! Even if you don't end up being able to keep Chance, I think you had to be proved wrong dear Ree. lol

A rolled up newspaper can be an effective training tool when used properly. For instance, use the rolled-up newspaper if your dog chews up something inappropriate or has a housebreaking accident. Bring the dog over to the destroyed object (or mess), then take the rolled-up newspaper and hit yourself over the head as you repeat the phrase,"I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG, I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG!"

He'll be getting neutered right after Thanksgiving and trust me it can't be soo enough..This little guy really needs to be in a home with very active family and some kids to chase around..He's just way to much energy for us..I love him to death but we are really not the kind of home he needs..I hope to at least have his basic obedience down before he gets into a new forever home because he has absolutely no clue how to behave insidde a house lol.

Before he met you, he probably has never been inside the house. Stubbs is the opposite. He is quite content to lay on the couch all day and lay beside the bed all night. And he only potties outside. I can't believe someone could leave such a perfect little gentleman in our kennel.

I can totally relate to Rees feelings about keeping Chance, and if she can blend Seigi together for one happy family. While back I looked into adopting another min pin from our shelter, that was months old. He was one of the last ones left, he wasnt going because he wasnt responding to people coming in to addopt. The problem was he responded to me with no problems, the workers said i was the first person he responded to. But Hunter didnt like him, very jelous. I went and spent alot of time with him, but Hunter wouldnt have any thing to do with him.It broke my heart. And with me still working on Hunters insecure of other people contact, I didnt think it was fair to not see him thur this first. This is baby steps for him. I think its wonderful that you are fostering him now, you have a big heart!

Thanks piratekitty...As the days goes by and Chance comes more and more out of his shell it's becoming evident that the ideal home for him is with a very active family..His energy is incredible..It's also become clear that there's without a doubt a hunting breed in his bloodline..When he's outside all bets are off when it comes to playing fetch because the absolute only agenda he has is following a scent and tracking down the animal it belongs to..He has to be continually reminded that has eat there to go potty just so he'll pee and poop..As much as we love him and hubby wants to keep him I really don't think it would be fair to Chance..We both have health issues and we're struggling now to keep up with his energy level and trying to make sure he's getting all the physical and mental stimulation we can...That in it's self is a chore since he has an attention span of about 3 seconds lol..

Oh, it sounds like you aren't going to keep him .
But at least you know your limitations and keeping a level head about this.
You obvisously are thinking about what will be best for Chance and for that I think your wonderful.
To many times, people will "convince" themselves that " I can do this" and it turns out to be a disaster. For both the dog and human.
But where ever you decide Chance ends up, he'll be glad you gave him a "second chance". No pun intended, OK, maybe just a little bit.

We are keeping Stubbs. He only has a year or two left in him and would probably get put to sleep if we took him to the pound.
