Leg lifting
We have 3 male dogs and none of them lift their leg to pee. They all squat like girls. Why doesn't any of them lift their leg to pee? I have seen other peoples' dogs do it.

how old are they? dandy started lifting his leg occasionally when he was 4mo old but really he was about 9mo when he stopped squatting.
could be a hip thing - the dog up the road doesn't, he just kind of does a hip thrust and pees right there. dandy does that, too, if he's overspraying a female mark or - and i can't help laughing when he does this - he'll walk along peeing lifting one back leg halfway up at a time.
did a quick check: apparently dogs who are never exposed to the need to pee on an upright (tree, wall, someone's leg) are far less likely to learn the art of cocking a leg.

ok. Buster is 3 and Porter is going to be 3 soon. There are no hip problems. I don't see why dogs don't feel the need to leave pee mail. We do see stray dogs a lot in our neighborhood and sometimes in our yard. The dogs do bark at them when they see them, but never leave pee mail.

Seigi's going to be 2 in March and he doesn't lift his leg either and my last Akita Kujo didn't start doing it until he was almost 3.

Porter used to when we first got him, but he quit shortly after that. I've never scolded him for it. That's how male dogs are supposed to pee. He just quit doing it. He only pees to relieve himself.

YOU are lucky.
A dog that squats is ten times better than a dog that hikes their leg!

Mine always lifted legs. Maybe because they were neutered later verse early? Kuma's my first bitch and to this day I still find it adorable that she squats...I think I just love that girl too much!

A rolled up newspaper can be an effective training tool when used properly. For instance, use the rolled-up newspaper if your dog chews up something inappropriate or has a housebreaking accident. Bring the dog over to the destroyed object (or mess), then take the rolled-up newspaper and hit yourself over the head as you repeat the phrase,"I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG, I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG!"

Buster was neutered at 2 years per his breeder contract. He still pees like a girl.

you know what? count yourself lucky.
the times dandy does hike a leg, he's so distractable that the stuff ends up *everywhere*.
i'm not kidding - he'll be peeing away and then "oo! look! plastic bag!" and off he goes, still peeing!

Buster squats and pees on the back of his front legs. I have to wipe them down every time he comes back in. I would prefer he lift his leg so he would quit peeing on himself.
