What breed of dog suits me?
Hi. My name is Amanda, and I am a sophomore in college. I live in the dorms now, but I plan to move into a condo this summer, and I'd like to get myself a dog. I was wondering what kind of breed would be best for me, and I thought some of you would be able to offer suggestions.
Here are some details about what I want:
I want a dog that will bond to me, but that can still be independant. It may be left alone for hours while I'm in class or at work.
It needs to be intelligent and easy to train. I plan on litter training it, and I would have fun teaching a dog tricks.
I am going to need the dog to be pretty low-maintenace. I can't have a dog that needs much grooming.
I will want to visit family and friends out of state, so I want a dog that can travel, and that will be friendly toward other people and pets. (I can't have my dog attacking mom's cats or grandma's shi tsu!)
I want the dog to be relatively calm and cuddly, but still lively enough to want to play with me.
Well that's the general idea. So far, I'm pretty sure that I want a small dog (at least under 15 pounds, preferably under 10), and I think I want a female, since they tend to be calmer and less aggressive.
Please help me! I need suggestions
Thanks in advace,
Amanda

I have the perfect dog for you - a toy one!
Honestly, you don't sound in any way ready or prepared for a dog to me.

Cat
I agree. Not to be rude but it doesn't sound like you are ready for a dog. Sounds like the best animal for you would be a cat. You can even leave them home when you are away for a weekend. I'm 20 and just got a dog a few months ago. I also have 4 cats.
And let me tell you...i could of gotten 6 more cats and had less stress then this one dog has put me through. OR, if you really don't like cats and you REALLY want a dog i would go with a Corgi (Welsh or Pembroke). They are about $250-$300 depending on if you want a male or female but they are WONDERFUL apartment dogs ... very gentle ... don't bark ... don't bite. Or you could go with a Yorkie ... but keep in mind they yap ... A LOT !!
Hope this helped.

I agree with the above posts. Dogs take alot of time and attention. Maybe you should wait till you have a little more time to spend with one.

I have to agree with the other posts. No offense but dogs require alot of trainig, affection and socialization. It doesn't sound like you have time for that.I also agree that a cat maybe a better option for you. Some people don't realize the consant work, traing, health care and vet visits that go along with owning a dog,Please reconsider.

I would say to at least wait until you're done with classes. Dogs can't be left alone all day, especially puppies. They have to go out at least every few hours until they are house trained. If you're gone all day, you'll come home to messes galore no matter what kind of dog you get. Dogs are awesome, but a LOT of responsibility. Please wait until you have more time to spend with one.

I agree with everyone else
If you ahve to consider everything as you ahve listed your OCD for htis would create a neurotic pet.
Pets ae people, they require unconditional love and maintainence like a small toddler or baby. Afetr all thast what they are, four legged babies.
Absolutely a toy, stuffed animal would be best. You get a " pet" because you love them, not becaus ethey fit a profile.
wait until you mature alittle more before even thinking about it.

Again, not meaning to sound mean... but you sound like people who only want to own a bird/parrot so that it will talk. Not all birds talk either!

Which breed is best for me
My name is Puppyfinder im very interseted in getting a dog but I have no idea what type of breed is right for me.
I need a dog that is small, it should be in the toy categorie. My biggest concerne about getting a dog is, will it like my cat and will me cat like it. My cat is the king of the house and im not sure how he would react to me getting a dog.
I was wondering if anyone had some imput. My heart is really set on a dog and im willing to accept all its needs and wants.
Please dose anyone have any idea on what brred is right for me or any good sites that have helped them in the past?

I honestly can't think of a breed that would match all your needs. I'd suggest going to a bookstore and looking through a book of all the different dog breeds and compare them.

Selectapet.com
Hi for those not sure of what type of dog or cat would be appropriate selectapet might give you and idea, you get the chance to enter your pet physical prefrence but then also goes into what breeds would be appropriate, re size, maintinence trainablitly, etc, or the pedigree and whiskas sites also have links to similar questionaires but are dog/ cat specific.

It sounds like you would like a Yorkie. They are cute, cuddly, can be full of energy, and are usually not aggressive towards other dogs. The only problem is that they require a *Lot* of attention... so make sure that your schedule is open enough to allow that.

Get a cat. Not as much responsibility. Clean littler once a day. feed twice a day. Play 15 minutes a day and curl up with them to go to sleep. They can be left alone all day. They don't chew things up or pee on the rug. Thay don't need to go out every hour like a puppy does. Please do not consider getting a dog. When you get a pet, you always think of their needs before yours. You would be sentencing a dog to life in prison if you cannot make it the center of your life.
