Default How to train a dog using treats or toys?

What is the best way to train a dog? Using treats or using toys? What to do when the dog is not doing what you want the dog to do? I am just curious and want to get some opinions.

I used simple way in training my dog. Food is best way to make them follows command. If my dog behaves well I let him choose the best food for him. But if he disobey me, I'm giving him only bones to play. It's simple but effective way.

Both have their advantages, use what will motivate your dog the best. Then use it to reward your dog when he/she does what you ask (only when). Starting with frequent rewards for little successes then moving on to multiple commands for a reward. This way the dog doesn't start to rely on the treat.

It is mainly dependent upon the dog. Suki always wanted to play fetch with her squeaky toy. My Coco is definately food-motivated though a retreiver roll will work, too. Molly wants her belly rubbed. Abraham wants to play tug of war and get a hug. Cubby is a praise-and-scratch dog. And Maggie . . . . . . . . well, I think Maggie is a cat disguised as a dog.

For bad behaviors, a spray bottle of water is the most effective tool that I have found.

The spray bottle or just general scolding works well for punishments. Treats are really effective as a reward for good behavior.
