Default Groomers or Do It Yourself?

Do you take your long hair dogs to the groomers? Or do you cut trim and buzz them down yourself? I am curious as to what others do regarding this

I don't have long haired dogs anymore. I couldn't stand all the hair in my house. But when I did have one, I did all the grooming myself as I do now with my short hair dogs. I really didn't think it was all that hard...just time consuming.

When we had a peke-a-poo, we'd go through phases where we'd get tired of taking him to the groomer's, and swear we were going to save money by grooming him ourselves. But it is SUCH a lot of work and effort and no way could we ever do as good a job as the groomer, so we always ended up going back to the professional.

I have never done either, actually. I suppose I should consider having our dogs shaved in the summer but I can't bring myself to do it - the longest haired one is VERY skittish and I imagine it would make him crazy to have those clippers close to him.

I do cut all their toenails myself though.

I desperately wish I could cut this dog;'s hair...it costs $40 to take him to the vet once a month, which isn't a whole lot, but currently I'm out of work and so his the husband and we just don't even have the money for groceries... but we tried once...spent an hour trying..but he has adhd..was running around, wiggling, squirming, i held him but his hair was too thick for both pairs of cutters we had and it just went badly :sigh: I wish I could do it myself so badly to save some money.

You do tend to find that a lot of dogs will behave for a groomer when they won't for the owner. They can play you like an old fiddle

One trick is to make sure you lift the dog off the floor and put him onto a non-slip surface to groom him. This will give him the idea that you mean business and playtime is over.

It doesn't work in all cases, but does help in some. Do make sure though that their is somebody there at all times to make sure the dog doesn't fall off the table.

I'd give yourself a treat and a break and get a dog groomer to do the dirty work - get a cuppa coffee and come back to see your baby all fussed over and ready to go!

My brother and I both prefer bringing our dogs to groomers only because the first time we did it, we felt and smelt the difference as opposed to our efforts’ results when we did the grooming.

I never cut my dog's hair. I let the groomers do it. I'm afraid that my baby would look like a monster if I do the cutting myself. Eek! I tried cutting my dog's nails once but he bled. It's so scary. How should I do it ??? So, I just let the groomers do the cutting of nails too. But I do the brushing at home. I use a pin brush and a slicker brush.

My dogs have short hair, so I don't have to worry so much. Now, if I had a long haired dog, I would definitely take him/her to the groomer because I am not too good with that kinda thing.
