The smell is probably coming from his ears. Also with their noses so close to ground that could also be a problem

Could have earmites. Are the inside of the ears black and stinky? If so, get some mite killer available at feed stores, grocery stores petsmart....everywhere. Mites will make the dog stink from across the room and baths don't help!

There are a number of skin conditions that can cause smell.I would recommend to take Fido to the vet. He should be able to tell you why your dog smells. It could be his diet too. What are you feeding him?

After you bathe your dog do you use a brush to bring the oil's out of his skin? Have you plucked his ear hair to see if there is anything in the ear canal? He may possibly be having a reaction to his food. I use Coat Handler shampoo & Conditioner & bathe weekly unless they get into something. My dogs will go roll in the yard immediatly after bath & Dry time. I purchased a spray to help freshen them up between baths. A friend of mine got an older Shih Tzu and she has the same problem. There is just something in her dog's body that omit's a sour smell. Her Vet said everything is fine & told her to give the dog a vinegar spray. It does help for a little while.

Believe it or not...your dogs skin can smell badly if they are on a certain food. Perhaps try changing the diet they are on and see. Also, check for bugs, skin disorders, ear mites..etc. I had a dog once that stunk sooooo bad...my vet told us to change the food and sure enough, after a little while, she began to smell better. Some breeds have more sensitivity to certain foods than others, whether its their digestive system or their skin.

There is an Anal gland that is probably plugged. Take your dog to a vet or a groomer to have the gland opened up to drain. It is an easy procedure, they just go into the Anas and pop it with their finger. Sounds gross, but works.

Natural remedy...
Of course you must first rule out any medical reasons for your dog's odor, but sometimes dogs SMELL! Try this from
Why does my dog stink?
..."We use and recommend a supplement of liquid chlorophyll. Liquid chlorophyll neutralizes body odors, aids in digestion, and is good for your dog’s heart. It naturally neutralizes stink from breath, odors that originate from the body or skin, and decreases the smell of dog poop. Chlorophyll is a naturally occurring substance that has been used in deodorants for people with allergies for years."

I'm unsure of what the cause of your dog smelling may be, but some dogs just have that "doggy smell"! To keep your dog smelling fresher for longer try these professional tips:
- Purchase a gentle (natural) shampoo, this will gently cleanse your pets coat, removing smells without stripping it of the essential oils needed to keep it shiny and healthy. If the skin is dry its body will over-produce sebum to hydrate the skin which may make the coat greasy and all this will do is attract dirt and cause a smell.
- Make sure you shampoo around the face where dried food and dirt can get caught in his beard and face. If you're afraid of getting shampoo into the dogs eyes or mouth use and old toothbrush to scrub around the face. Try and shampoo his feet and scrub between his toes as best you can as these get full of dirt and in some older dogs - feaces. Also don't neglect the sanitary areas (especially bitches) as this area can get a bit pongy.
- Conditioners can add an extra degree of fragrance without being too overpowering and will usually last longer than a doggy deoderant. It will leave the coat lovely and soft, shiny and in longer coats, more manageble.
- Make sure you dry your dog as thoroughly as you can. Letting your dog airdry will make him smell like "wet dog". Instead squeeze off the excess water from the coat, ears and tail. If your dog is kept short, firmly run your hands along his body to "squegee" the water off. Towel dry all over, focusing on head and feet and use a (hair)dryer on the body, legs and lightly on head and feet to get your dog as dry as possible. (make sure the heat setting into too hot).
- A spritz of doggy deoderant to finish and he should be smelling sweet for days!

Find the Source
It would be a good idea to go over your dog and find the source of the smell:
Check and i mean smell...
- under the tail... if thats the strongest smelling point but theres no poopie and it has kind of a "hormone" like smell get someone to express the anal glands. Its pretty grose to do yourself and if you don't know what your doing you could hurt them.
-check the boy or girl parts.. if theres extra hair there then that can collect pee and other smelly stuff. You may need to either thuroughly wash or shave those areas to keep yukie stuff from building up.
-check the dogs back, is it the coat in general that smells?
-Check the feet too they may need cleaning or clipping between the pads
-Check the ears, bad ears can smell really strong, and may need vet attention if its some kind of infection or allergies
-check the corners of their mouth... all sorts of goodies can be hiding in the fur by their mouth...
- Does he have bad breath??? do his teeth need to be cleaned? or has he been eating something foul??
-and check the area below his eye's, if they tear alot then that area can stay moist... leading to yeast and other smelly things growing in there... If thats where the smell is coming from you can comb out any chunkies and wash it with a warm wet cloth and gentally dry it, it may need to be done daily, or you can ask a groomer for a shaved or clean face.. a different look for a shih tzu but it might be an option if cleaning isn't and it can look pretty cute when done right. :-D
