Default when should a groomer refuse to do some things?

I am a groomer with 35 years experience behind me, and rarely run into a problem grooming at this point (mostly because I take the time to gain a dogs trust as I am handling them) except for a couple of things. Some pets just will not willingly, allow some things to be done that the pet owner expects us groomers to do. My question as a groomer asking pet owners is if your dog...as much as an angel as they are...will fight (and yes willing to bite too!) somethings like clipping toe nails, or removing ear hair, or brushing out mats, would you rather the groomer bypass these things? It is so difficult to explain to a client that thinks the sun rises and sets because of their pet and has difficulty remembering that they ARE still animals, that these things do occur.

i have two standard poodles and send them to my groomer every six weeks, in the past she frequently brought my dogs back telling me she had to cut them shorter that usual or adapt the cut because of matts in the coat, and i have a huge amount of respect for her because of this, i dont want a groomer who is going to stress or hurt either of my dogs this also taught me the huge importance of grooming my dogs very regularily in between grooms and not relying soley on the proffesional to do it for me. i think owners should take more responsibilty for their own dogs well being and maintain a good coat that the groomer ownly needs to clip.-x-

As a groomer there are some things I will refuse to do, and these aren't things based on a dogs behavior. Occasionally we'll have someone over the summer (so many this year :shock who have a Sheepdog, Border Collie, Malamute etc.. who want it SHAVED! I try to convince these owners not to do it and all the good things about leaving the coat on and just stripping it out. Anyway some owners are just hell bent on clipping their dogs over summer, so when one of these people come in, I'll just put my foot down and say "I wont do it". If they want their double or heavy coated dogs clipped, they can find someone else as I just can't bring myself to do that on these particular coated dogs, it seems like such a shame to clip them as their hair will grow back all horrible and frizzy  lol

I think you should talk and explain it to the customer better... Show to them that their dog is not participating which makes the task really hard. |
