First and foremost, he should be brushed thoroughly to remove any mats or tangles that may be in his coat. Then, I would suggest a good whitening shampoo (if he has sensitive skin, then I would use a hypoallergenic oatmeal shampoo) and wash him twice with it. The hard part is getting him dry. Professional groomers like myself use what is called a high-velocity dryer or force dryer to get the water off of the coat. It also straightens the hair and fluffs out the whole coat. It would be ideal to have one at home, but they are a little expensive. I would use maybe a human hair dryer on the coolest setting, and fluff out his coat with a brush the whole time. It will take a really, really long time, but it should get him reasonably fluffy. However, I have seen St. Bernards that have a peculiar fine, flat coat that just won't do anything but lie there like there's a lead weight attached to it! If you really like the look, you could also look at taking him to a professional groomer. Many will do a nice, thorough bath for your dog; you don't have to get him a haircut if you don't want to! I work at PetSmart, and we actually have a separate set of appointments for people who want their dogs to just get a good bath and brush-out. I hope I helped some. If you have any more questions, just ask!
