I've been using Aveeno baby wash & shampoo on Lara. I figured that if people used it on human babies, it had to be really mild and would be o.k. for her. I haven't had any problems with it so far...

I have also used baby shampoo on my dog for many years - no problems and he sure does smell awesome for a day or two!

Naaaaaaa. It won't hurt, but it's far from the best. There are lots better shampoos, both dog and human. If baby shampoo were the best, you wouldn't be seeing all of those bottles of Pantene at the dog shows.

Polytar, from Boots chemist, is a also a good shampoo for dogs. My friend recommended it to me.

Coal tar is one of the first known human carcinogens. As a general rule, anything that causes cancer in one species of mammals will also cause it in other species of mammals.

However, coal tar shampoos can be an effective treatment for some skin diseases. I wouldn't use it on a dog that doesn't have a diagnosed skin disease that's responsive to coal tar. And if the dog does have a skin disease, I'd try the other medicated shampoos first, and resort to coal tar only when all else fails. And I'd be sure to wear gloves when using it.

Default Oatmeal

Hi - you are all very right human shampoo should never be used on dogs or cats.
I like shampoos that contain oatmeal for dry skin - in this case always follow up with a conditioner as well.
Some will recommend tar based shampoos for soothing the skin, but I am not happy with them from a natural standpoint.
You can also add oils to the dogs food. Dr. Maggie's is good but I would also say a good olive oil can also work well.

There is absolutely no reason not to use human shampoos on a dog or cat. None whatsoever. It's not like there's a separate list of ingredients for pet shampoo as opposed to human shampoo. It's all the same stuff.
