Default Trimming Those Toenails

Toenails:

It is a good practice to get into the habit of trimming your pet's toenails at least once a month when they are still puppies because their nails grow so fast and are sharp and pointed which is easier for their nails to become caught in carpeting. This could cause a toenail to be ripped right off the cuticle. Give them a manicure regularly to keep the toenails trimmed down to prevent any accident from happening and get them used to having their paws touched. If you do cut the nails too short, just rinse the entire paw off under warm water and then wet a washcloth with warm water and wrap the cloth around the animal's paw and place slight pressure on the paw for twenty minutes and the bleeding should stop.(I have heard to put flour on the cut to stop the bleeding also!) Be sure and remember to trim the dewclaws on puppies too.
Trimming your pet's toenails will save you $10.00 that you would spend at the vet plus trimming your pet's toenails yourself at home will help save on gasoline.

Lucky doesn't really have much of a problem with her nails because she walks on cement a lot which tends to wear down her nails. When we go to the vet every few months to pick up some heartworm prevention or something we have them cut her nails. They do it free thankfully. My cat used to get her nails caught in the carpet from time to time. She HATED to have her nails trimmed. It was always an adventure trying to trim those nails. Don't make me mention the time when she was sprayed by a skunk and we had to bathe her...

Hey, that's great that your vet does it free of charge! Mine charges $10.00 unless it is an office call--then it is $6.50! I sometimes attempt to do Corky's but Max (Paxer) has black-black toenails and is very fussy anyhow so I have to get the vet to do it. Lol, he is a perfect model dog at the vet's!! Little sh*t! Makes me look bad too!

We had this discussion on another forum a few years ago. A woman who had Miniature Pinschers had difficulty in getting the dogs to calm down for it.
One day while doing laundry she was folding her husbands sweat socks. One of the dogs was intrigued with the sock. At that last second she pulled it over his head. He totally calmed down. With this she thought she would try to trim the nails. Sure enough the dog just laid there. Once done, she pulled off the sock and the dog returned to normal. Odd thing was that the others all wanted the sock also. She did all their nails and continues to do them this way since.
I had to admit, it was a new one on me.

Lol, that sounds like something to try but I'd have to have Paul Bunyon's sock! Maybe I can try a t-shirt! Now if I could just see through his black toenails to the quick!

How do you know how far down to cut? My dogs nails are black, and I am afraid I will hurt him. I am letting a groomer do it, but would rather do it myself. So how can you tell how far is too far? Thanks.

For me, I usually cut just past the bend where it starts to turn downward. You can usually if looking at the bottom of the nail see a small piece that runs under it only so far. Staying past this I have had no problem and discovered years back But on another note so to speak, if you dog is a hardy digger, you will not have to worry about the front paws. Amie has little to no nails in front nor does Zeke. To help even more, Zeke my GP actually bites his hind nails. I have never had to clip them.

Talking Nails

My dog is one year old (she is also a MinPin/Manchester mix!) and I always take her for a super long walk and have her do a lot of running beforehand. Then I put her up on a low table so I can sit at eye-level with her while I trim her nails. Some nails are dark and others are white on her tiny paws, and with those, I trim the white nails first and trim the dark ones to about the same length.
AND FOR THE NAIL CLIPPERS, I would recommend getting a pair that has a hole in it with a piece of metal that comes through the hole; NOT a pair that looks a little similar to pliers. I have watched a groomer use "grinders" on a dog, and the light buzzing usually scares the dog, so I wouldn't recommend those either.
Once you are finished clipping each paw OR after you are completely done clipping the dogs' nails, give them a treat so they realize that getting their nails clipped is a good thing. I always clip ALL of the nails first, then file at them a little to dull them down so they aren't so chipped and sharp from the clippers... I also clip the nails BEFORE I give her a bath, too. She is pretty patient and easy to handle during this time.

As an AKC breeder and one who has been around and studied both MP's and MT's, I see no Manchester Terrier in your little dog. I do see MP and Chihuahua which would explain the white nails you note. MP's nor MT's will ever produce white nails. Chi's on the other hand do. Not to mention, the tail and coat indicate medium coat hairs which is not found on MT's. The muzzle marking is MP but MT's do not have the "smile" that the MP produces. In addition, looks like white tip on rear feet. This will never happen on either breeds either. I have see dogs that look like this may times and are MP/Chi mixes which is very common. I have raised MP's for over 30 years and a close friend is an AKC breeder of MT's both toy and standard. The only times we have ever seen white nails is when crossed with a Chihuahua which many breeders have done to create smaller than standard MP's.

I remember the first time I got to trim the nails of my dog, it was hard. He was so playful and I think I had him got scared because I think he didn't want that. He cried a lot when ever I try to. I ended up going to the groomer to do that for me.

Red face To yogi :

The shelter that we got her from said that she had Manchester, MinPin, and something else mixed with her breed. She may not be a purebred, but I still love her! Thanks Yogi,

Unfortunately, you would be surprised how many shelters confuse Miniature Pinschers and Manchesters. I learned years ago to take their evaluation of breeds with a grain of salt.

I'm too much of a weenie to clip my dogs nails. The groomer or vet does it for me. I don't pull my Lhasa'sX's ear hair out either. I always feel like I'll hurt them. Maybe one day I'll try the nail clipping on my own. Hair pulling NOT because I hurt him once so I tense up too much.

A rolled up newspaper can be an effective training tool when used properly. For instance, use the rolled-up newspaper if your dog chews up something inappropriate or has a housebreaking accident. Bring the dog over to the destroyed object (or mess), then take the rolled-up newspaper and hit yourself over the head as you repeat the phrase,"I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG, I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG!"
