I need a bit of advice about hand stripping. I hand strip border terriers, I don't use stripping knives just my finger & thumb and a bit of chalk if needed. I have stripped a couple of borders now but i'm fairly new to hand stripping. The last border I did was definately blown & ready for stripping but when I got to his tail the hair came away very easily but left a hole where the hair had been! There was nothing underneath, why would this be and what advice would anyone give on stripping a Border Terriers tail? I have seen the tip & bottom of the tail being snipped with scissors to shape and then stripped, is this really OK to do? I use scissors around the anus and genitials. Any advice would be a great help.

I'm not an expert, but I do strip my own terrier, and my sister's Westie. On the Westie, as she's just a pet, I use thinning shears to do the underside of the tail, as it's a tad painful for her. My Oliver, when I tried to strip his tail, it did the same thing, left a bald patch on the top, so I leave his tail feathery





I also just use my finger and thumb, no knife, as I find it easier on the dog. I do, however use Chalk for the Westie.

I commend you for stripping your dogs, I much prefer a stripped Terrier, clipping ruins their coat, imo
