the benefits of brushing your dogs teeth outway the time it takes, not brushing could lead to heart disease, gingivitis, loss of teeth and digestive problems. I brush both of my dogs teeth every morning they both actually sit in the bathroom until i wash their face and bruch their teeth. I went to the vet when my oldest dog was 3 for a dental visit and they actually called me back to say that she didn't need to have the visit, i started out when they were both babies and have no problem.
My older Sheltie, Sparky, loves having his teeth brushed, LOL! Disco, the huge chocolate Lab/Sharpai doesn't mind it either, but Max, our young Sheltie, is getting used to it.
I try and brush their teeth a couple of times a week and give them hard things to chew on. Just like us humans, dogs can get diseased teeth and gums. I usually gauge the teeth brushing by how rank smelling their breath is, LOL!:mrgreen:
I brush my dogs teeth once a week using a doggy toothbrush and toothpaste. He'd rather eat the toothpaste, but hes learning quickly to accept having his teeth brushed. I feel rather lucky in the sence that he'll let me do anything I want with him except his nails. We're still having a battle there. He's about 2 years old, and I got him from the Humane Society about a month ago. So yes with time and patience even older dogs can come to accept having their teeth brushed. Patience being the key word.
I brush my dog's teeth with only water. He tries to chew the brush, but it's okay ... better than nothing. I hear that giving dogs bones to chew on is supposed to aid in their dental health. I try to give Rocky a large bone every couple of weeks. He devours it!
