Default Hair Cuts

I was just wandering for people with long hair dogs, how often do you cut your dogs hair if you do atall?

Do you do it yourself or get it done professionaly?

I have a long haired dog. We only cut his hair if it's severely tangled or if it's too hot. As much as possible, I want my doggie to have a long hair.

My dad knows to cut his hair but it doesn't look too good. So, I prefer to bring him to a professional groomer.

We have a Scottish terrier....his hair grows quickly, ideally he would need his hair cut once a month because it's ridiculous.
I cant afford to take him to the groomers right now which bites because he desperately needs it...I need to bathe him often since his long hairs get into his food and he is a very messy puppy! So i bathe him twice a week and brush out his knots.
We tried before to cut it, it didn't go very well lol He does not like to sit still!
But he did not get hurt so that's good

Really I do not think you need to get your dogs hair cut...
Unless:
It is tooooooo looooonnng,
It is too hot, dog looks unconfortable,
you like style!,
You are showing in dog shows,
You just want to,
But I would only take enough off to uncover a little bit of the belly, shoulders, head( especially if over the eyes), and in between the pads of the feet. You can do it yourself, if you do trust yourself not to make a bad cut or anything.

The whole thing is up to you though.

Zoe's hair is growing and should be long by the time she is one year, I take her to a professional to cut the hair that goes in her eyes and bottom of her paws, I'm too scared I'll hurt her.

i am a groomer.
most dogs come to me ever 6-10 weeks, dogs like westies, poodles, spaniels etc but the long haired breads come to be just brushed and bathed mainly, a little trim on their feet and belly, eyes, and a bath. these come in about 8 week intervals.
some keep the hair long, some have it clipped short, some puppy cuts, it all depends how you cope with the hair as much as how the dog copes with it,
just remember never bath a matted dog, the matts will only get worse
haircuts should suit life styles and haircuts shouldnt hurt

As a groomer also I can give my input: Most of my hair cut clients come every 3-6 weeks (poodles, bichons, spaniels, PWD, terriers, etc.) My bath dogs (labs, mastiffs, goldens, sheps, etc.) come every 6 - 8 weeks. I also have a few occasional clients who just come when their dogs are fintly, smelly and matted but that is not the norm.

FYI: Only dogs with HAIR (poodles, terriers, etc.) should get hair cuts. It is a myth that shaving a dog with fur (most breeds) makes them cooler, it is actually very unsafe for them. When clipped they are unable to properly regulate their body temperature and are also more susceptible to sun damage. If your dog is extremely matted and requires a strip down (sometimes called a puppy or summer cut by some groomers) or has a run in with a clipper happy, lazy groomer you need to apply dog safe sunscreen daily until the coat has grown back.

I have a mix between a Yorkie and a Papillon and don't cut her much at all, only trim the twisted hair in her 'armpits' and around her bum...LOL..what do you call a dog's armpit anyway?
