Default Question about feeding chicken

Well, I was once told about someone's dog who died from being fed chicken bones. He got slivers from the bones stuck in his throat.

Has anyone else heard of this happening, or have you been feeding your dog chicken bones for years and years and never had a problem? I would like to know, either way, so I can get over this paranoia about letting my dog have chicken bones.

Maybe it is just a small dog who can have issues like this?

Thanks, anyone who can tell me anything about this.

Cooked dog bones become brittle and hallowed and will splinter and cut a dogs mouth, gums , throat and possibley their stomach and intenstines, hence the danger.

However, raw chicken bones are NOT brittle, they are edible and easy for dogs to digest. Many breeders and show moms & das feed their dogs raw chicken with bones, so they get equal amounts of meat and calcium from the bones.

I can attest to that!!
My dogs are on a raw diet. One is large (60 ish lbs) , the other small ( 15 lbs). Both can easily eat and digest chicken quarters As well as raw fish with bones and pork feets....they LOVE pork feet and you can get em cheap at walmart

Thanks for the replies, I really do appreciate finally having an answer to something I've worried about for years

Well, now I just need to get over my fears of worms and other gross things I think my dog will get if he eats raw meats...
Since it seems the bones themselves may be much of the nutrition a dog needs from meats.

Thanks again, this is really a knowledgeable community of doggie people!

I don't know about where you live, but now in the UK, you can basically buy the 'whole' product in chunks or mince form to feed pets. There are some places on line that will give you the nearest stockist.

It may be worth doing a search for this kind of thing.

I have also heard about this from many of my friends. About chicken bones can cause wounds in the digestive tracts. I really haven’t seen any dogs die about it but, there is nothing wrong in not feeding them chicken bones. I would rather do a preventive measure rather than being sorry later on

I can see the worry with a small dog breed, but I'd say that you're pretty safe with giving raw meat to most dogs - after all, what you're getting from the butcher is far better than what they would get in the wild!
