Default To Castrate or Not?

I must be 'Old School', but we never had dogs castrated unless their was an aggression problem. These days a lot of people I know have the males castrated, but unless they are having behaviour problems or are 'runners' who scour the land trying to sire puppies, I really can't see the point.

Do most pet owners have their dogs done or not?

I think most owners do because of the push by the local dog pound to make sure that only wanted dogs are born... it's one thing to actively breed your pet, another to let him/her romp around and then dump a pile of puppies off at the dog pound or worse!

All of my dogs are spayed or nuetered. I just think it is the responsible thing to do.

I have a 12 1/2 year old intact male Husky. He's never been bred, but he has never showed any of the typical male behaviors either. He never marked in the house, he's never gone looking for fights, he's just a super mellow, dog and human-friendly dog.

So we figured, why put him through surgery when for him, it was unnecessary? He has lived his whole long life with these testicles, and it's never been a problem. Recently we saw a new vet, and she was trying to convince me to neuter him now! I couldn't help it, I laughed out loud! I told her that even if he got cancer now, well, he's 12 1/2 years old. Something's going to take him in the not-too-distant future, and it's not going to be anesthesia for a neuter.

I've always grown up with un-neutered males. My dad would only let me get male dogs & he didn't really agree with getting them neutered. Our dogs never went anywhere & never had agression problems. I personally don't see the point inhaving it done. That's just my opinion though.

I have always and will always neuter my pets. As a PP said, it's the responsible thing to do to help control pet overpopulation. There are enough animals out there as it is who need homes.

My decision wasn't related to his temperament.

My dogs isn't and won't be. Right now he is being shown, so it is out of the question. As for agression, when we take him to the off leash parks, he is the most submissive dog there.

As for creating unwanted puppies, we don't have a backyard, so he isn't loose. He is always on lead unless he is in the off leash park.

Our dogs are not neutered but they haven't impregnated any bitch. Haha. They can't because they are always in our backyard. They only go out if I walk them. But if ever I'm going to buy another dog, I'll have him neutered. They say that neutered dogs are healthier. I am not planning to breed anyway.

Our dogs are not fixed either. People say it's the responsible thing to do, but that's only if you are not responsible enough to keep the dog sin your supervision in my opinion with most people. I am in many groups for dogs, and most the owners are kids and they just do not do what they should do to protect their dogs and keep an eye on them.
Our dogs have never been in a situation where they may impregnate someone elses dogs. They are not kept somewhere where they can escape, and they are leashed anytime we go anywhere, even if there are no female dogs around.
Some people just find it easier to fix them though... i personally have seen many dogs fixed, and their personalities change, and I fell in love with my dogs as the are

I don't think that neutering effects a dogs' personality...if it sometimes seems that way I would that there were likely other factors, unrelated to neutering, involved.
I have nothing against those who choose not to neuter because they feel that they are responsible enough to avoid accidents or are showing or breeding (responsibly).

Both of my dogs are fixed. Sebastian wasn't neutered until he was 5yrs old and I'm convinced that he would not have lost his home if he and the other dog in his previous home had both been neutered right away. Both dogs got along fine until the younger one reached sexual maturity...then it got so bad that Sebastian had to be rehomed.

I prefer spaying/neutering for my dogs for health reasons. I personally know of several female dogs that have either had to be euthanized or have needed emergency spay surgeries because of pyometra. And my aunts' 8yr old unaltered female Poodle was diagnosed with mammary cancer last year. These are things that spaying would have prevented.
