Nutro, Royal Canin
I have my puppy on Nutro Puppy- Chicken Formula now. The breeder had her on Purina Puppy Chow, which has alot of corn products in it & is very bad. My vet likes Science Diet Nature's Own, but I've heard some mixed reviews about Science Diet lately, which I always thought was really good. Royal Canin also had a strong reputation for good foods- we have our cats on a limited ingredients Royal Canin right now, but we haven't tried any of the dog foods.
If your puppy is going to large, I would also find a brand with a large breed puppy formula since their needs are different from small dogs.
As far as canned or dry goes... there are so many theories out there: dry is good for their teeth, wet is good for their urinary tract, etc, etc... but overall I think dry is best (and so much easier!) If you really wanted to do wet, you could mix the two together- just a thought.

The best food for dogs of any age is raw meat products, muscle, muscle on bone, organs, etc. I have a walking and running proof of this right near my house. My oldest dogs live up to age of 16-17 years, they hunt a lot and rarely taken to vet clinic; only in a case of emergency, which is very rare. They do not need vets; I vaccinate them at home as needed.

There is no "one best" food for dogs, even though the dog food marketers try to convince you of that. You should try to feed the best food you can afford, but dont feel bad if you can't afford food that costs $2-$3 a pound. It's pretty well proven among dog fanciers (as opposed to commercial breeders) that the only dogs who "need" puppy formula foods are toy breeds who will be fed from the grocery store brands. Most older pups of medium to large breeds do well on any quality adult formula feed. If it makes you feel better, go ahead and feed a large breed formula puppy feed but it's not necessary.
I have been showing and breeding larger breeds for over 25yrs and I never feed pups over 8 weeks old anything but adult food, and I have produced many Champions doing just that.
