Default My otherwise healthy puppies throw up a lot

I have 2 almost 5 month old Standard Poodle pups and they seem to throw up quite a bit. I've always thought it was a case of greedy puppies eating too fast and then playing on full bellies, but I want to double check here and see if anyone thinks this is a problem.

After one of them throws up, they will both go back and eat it if I don't clean it up fast enough. But in all cases they go right back to their rough-housing as if nothing happened. They show no signs of being sick, except for this throwing up business. They are otherwise healthy, alert, and very active. And the throwing up is not predictible, sometimes one throws up, sometimes it's the other, sometimes no one throws up.

They both eat Science Diet Puppy, FYI.

Has anyone else had this happen? Should I be concerned?

Default If you are really concerned

I would mention it to your vet. My pup who is also 5 months throws up a bit too, (and he goes back and eats it as well!)I think it is normal to a small degree, if its realy regular it might be something more, maybe even just a tummy disagreeance to the food that they are being given, even some of the good and reputable brands can still not always agree with all dogs.

I do think that this case is caused by eating way to fast (greedily) and then getting overly excited.

A suggestion would be to feed them in separate areas (crates would be ideal) and not allow any play or heavy exercise for at least 30 minutes after eating. This is a good habit to get into, as Standard Poodles have a propensity to GDV (bloat) and since there is still no conclusive "cause" for GDV, it is recommended to offer smaller meals several times a day, limit large quantities of water and food just prior to and after play, and don't exercise (play) directly after consuming a meal. You can also feed in a larger flat bottom pan (so the kibbles spread out more), this helps to keep them from gulping it down. When they gulp it down, they are also taking in more air with it and can cause a bit of discomfort in the tummy.

I'm not sure of your feeding schedule, but feeding 3 small meals a day would be alot better for them under these circumstances and you might want to try another food. The SD is awfully grainy and for what you are paying for it, you can find an abundance of other foods that have alot more "meat" in them.

Thanks for all the responses. I do think the throwing up is caused by eating too fast and then running around. We've started leaving a bowl of food out all day long and they both just nibble at it throughout the day and they haven't thrown up since. It's actually pretty cute because they will put a few pieces in their mouths and then wander over to their bed to crunch, kind of like how people grab a handful of nuts from a dish.
