Default question on when, how much, and what to feed my puppy....

Hello,
we recently got a 9 wk old (possibly almost 10 wks old) puppy from the pound... Currently we are feeding here a generic medium size dog food as we had gotten a different dog we found in the paper and had to take her back... Ok so for my questions... I have thought about buying her some purina puppy chow as I can get it fairly cheap (keeping in mind I have 2 children and on a limited budget). I have heard 2 different opinions about purina....up until now I have heard all good things about it, but while i was about searching for info on diff subjects for caring for my dog. I ran across somethings that said purina was not so good for a dog....So I thought I would get your opinion on it before going out and buy it...I would like to get her on a better dog food that more suits her age... altho she doesnt mind eating it...lol I would just feel better knowing she is eating something more suiting for her... Also I am curently working on her feeding schedule... I have also heard a few diff things on it...some say 2x's a day is sufficent and others say 3x's a day... currently I am feeding her 3x's a day.... and last...lol I have heard that you go by what the bag says, but alot of the bags tell you this...for example 3 to 8 lbs and 8wks to 12 wks.... well how do you figure it out..lol i have been giving her alittle more than 1/3 cup each feeding and i usually leave it out for about 30 to an hr.... I know now know thats to long... only suppose to leave it out for about 10 - 15 mins...
Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appericated......

I personally have not her anything bad about purina my dog was eating it before, he now eats pedegree, its not to expensive here. i think the sugested amount of feedings on the bag really depend on the dog, some say you may have to feed less or more depending. I personaly feed my dog (almost a year) 2 times a day, 3 if he has had a more active day then normal, feed your dog what you think is a good amount, go by the guide lines on the bag and if it doesnt seem like enough or too much, change it a bit, atlest thats what i do. just keep an eye on your pups wieght as long has he's growing good, and doesnt look to skinny or too fat it should be alright!

I just recieved a book in the mail from purina about taking care of your pup, it had a guide in there about how to make sure your dog is getting enough food. also alot of tips and tricks for training and taking care of your pup, i just called the purina company ( number on the bag) and the lady said she would send me a free puppy guide book it was worth the phone call,. and its free we also recieved alot of informtion about purina, and pups, '
if your interested it would be worth it to call and see if you could get the guide to.!

Hope i have helped a bit!

So what brand of dog food do you suggest? I keep on hearing that whatever dog food that you can find in the groceries are not good. Can you suggest good quality food that are not super expensive?

ok so let me get this right.. any dog food u can buy in the supermarket is not good??? y is that?? not all that food can be bad... and to be honest.... i dont understand what makes all this dog food soo bad. when people by it all the time and there dogs live a long healthy life..... not tring to contradict u but i just dont uderstand... how all that food can be sooooo bad...when alot of them r so popular...can u please explain...cause the gerocery store and places like that r the closest store to me.... i have to drive almost 30 mins or more to get the nutro...which i am planning on trying as i signed up for a coupon for a free sample... i love my dog with all my heart... i just dont have a crap ton of money to spend on food....weither it be human, dog or cat...

I think for most dog foods, it just a matter of opinion i know lots of people that have fed there dog purina and other dog foods u buy in a grociery store and there dogs are just fine and healthy. i personally think it all just depends on the dog and there owner and what suits best, i mean im sure some of the dog food isnt that good just like human food.

I have to buy my food at the grociery store as it only sells in the grociery store and the drug store, there is not pet store here the closest one is 40min away and im with out transportation.

My dog is eating Pedigree, and he's doing great.

personal preferance and what suits your dog best

beks... see that is what i thought...cause i know there is some dog food that may not agree with some dogs... but i have never heard that all dog food from a gerocery store was bad...and like u i have to drive a while to get to a actual petstore... i have a care but some days i just dont have the gas to go that far to get dog food... I think i will just give the purina a try...and see how it goes... my vet gives out a free sample of science diet but i really cant afford it... so i think i will get her started on mixing her current food with the purina puppy chow cause the store that sells it is within walking distance from my house... so i am garanteed to be able to get there to get it even if we dont have the gas and its not expensive either... thanks for all your opinions... i really appericate them all!!
